More recipes from The Halogen Cookbook

Hi

Its time again for our monthly Newsletter, and this month we’re looking at Halogen Oven Cookbooks.

I recently bought a halogen oven and disappointingly it only came with 4 recipes. So I searched the usual places such as Amazon, W H Smiths and Waterstones for a cookbook but there are no cookbooks specifically for Halogen Ovens.

I did manage to find afew recipes on the internet but they usually involved US measurements; and have you ever tried to follow a US recipe?  It isn’t easy, with a cup of this and a quart of that!  I find cooking difficult enough without having to convert all the measurements and decipher different types of vegetables, zucchini, squash etc...

So I decided to create a cookbook specifically for Halogen ovens!

The originalHalogen cookbook is the only cookbook for cooking with Halogen Ovens.  It isn’t specific to any one particular brand of halogen oven and it’s packed with delicious and often low fat recipes.

We’ve now got two great cookbooks on our website The Halogen Cookbook and More recipes from the Halogen Cookbook.

The problem you’re going to face is that once you’ve tried out the recipes in the first book you’ll want more.  And luckily for you, you can now order “More recipes from the Halogen Cookbook” for the great price of £5.99 for a limited time only.

So don’t delay, visit our website today and order your copy of The Halogen Cookbook and More recipes from the Halogen Cookbook.

Many thanks

P.S

Order both books before 30th July for the great price of £8.99!  See the website for more details.

F A Q

How many recipes will I get?

There are over 20 different recipes in each of the recipe books, all specifically with Halogen ovens in mind.

Will it work with my oven?

The book has been designed to work with any Halogen oven (though as with any oven you should refer to the manufacturers instructions for guidelines on its use).

When will I receive my order?

As soon as you pay for your order via paypal (all payment types accepted) you will receive an email with a link to your document, where it can be downloaded immediately.

What if I’m not happy with my purchase?

Simply get in touch within 7 days and we will arrange for a full refund, alternatively if you have any questions about the recipes email: help@bookshoparoundthecorner.co.uk

Halogen Cookbook

Well, the Halogen cookbook is finally available on my website http://www.bookshoparoundthecorner.co.uk/page27.htm

There are 20 recipes so far and hopefully I'll be adding more as I find more recipes.

Happy cooking!

In search of a Halogen Cookbook

I had an interesting query on my website yesterday, requesting that I search for a cookbook specifically for cooking with Halogen.

Now, I don’t know about you, but the only Halogen I had heard of, was attached to the ceiling in my bathroom, and though they do get very hot it would be difficult (and messy) trying to cook on them...

So I did a bit of research, and as ever Google came to my rescue!

Well to start with it’s a compact table top cooker which cooks food quickly and is healthier than traditional cooking methods.  It uses powerful halogen technology to produce infra-red light waves that heat up food quickly. Basically it’s a huge glass container with a heating element built into the lid and fan that distributes heat quickly and evenly throughout the oven. They come with a couple of removable cooking racks so that any fat produced simply drains away, making meat products healthier. Its abit like a George Foreman but you can bake in it and do baked potatoes etc...

The JML Halogen Oven even has a self-cleaning function and a thaw option which makes it a really versatile gadget. It’s easy to carry and you can watch the food as it cooks.

So armed with this little information I set to work to find a cookbook, little did I know that everyone who ever owned one of these little cookers has been looking for a recipe book (ok maybe a bit of an exaggeration but there were lots of comments on forums and notice boards).

I searched all my usual haunts, second-hand book stores, online book dealers and even Amazon but to my great disappointment there really doesn’t seem to be a cookbook out there!  So the search for a halogen cookbook will continue though I think I’m going to have to get clever...so watch this space as the “great halogen cookbook hunt” continues

In the meantime I managed to get together about 50 recipes and with the help of Lulu.com, I hope to publish my very own Halogen Cookbook very shortly. So if you have any recipes that you think I might like (and photos!) then why not send them to me at mail@bookshoparoundthecorner.co.uk and I’ll give you a mention in my book!

Indian Cookbooks gain popularity

Indian cookbooks are universally popular, however in India cookbooks have only more recently started to enjoy success. More and more tv stations are showing cookery programmes and the market for cookbooks is booming. Apparently the market has grown by at least 40% in the last year as people look for fast, easy recipes and eye catching coffee table books.

I think the best examples are the ones which tie in recipes and travelling. Such is the demand for these books that Roli Books (Indian book publisher) last year printed 9,000 extra copies of food writer and docu-filmmaker Pushpesh Pant’s "Food Path", a chronicle of culinary traditions along the historic Grand Trunk Road from Kabul to Kolkata. (Get the book here). The type of people who buy cookbooks in India has also changed, and where as previously only women bought cookbooks, now men and women of all ages are looking for the latest cookbooks.

"Moti Mahal Cookbook" which lists the spicy traditional north Indian recipes from one of the capital’s oldest eateries, was voted the best Indian cookbook in London at the annual Curry Night last October.

Synopsis of another book called "Food Path"...

The Grand Trunk Road, the axis of the Indian subcontinent's heavily populated north since the sixteenth century, was the brainchild of Sher Shah Suri. "Food path: Cuisine along the Grand Trunk Road from Kabul to Kolkata" presents a compelling and beautifully illustrated history of the road since its emergence as ancient India's first route for traders and invaders. Driving along the classic route, full of the footprints of history and culture, one has an unmatched opportunity to discover the culinary riches of India. The seductive flavours range from the barbequed temptations of Peshawar and Rawalpindi to the sumptuous secrets of the imperial dastarkhans of Delhi and Agra; from the succulent kebabs of the Awadh region to the sublime vegetarian repast of Varanasi and the tantalizing sweets of Bengal. Indeed, the GT Road is the best introduction to the fulsome flavours of India. Bon voyage and bon appetit!

Gordon Ramsay - Healthy Appetite

In 2007 Gordon Ramsay was sued by a disgruntled restaurant manager in the USA who claims his reputation is in tatters after Gordon called him a "Lazy Tosser".  The manager of an indian restaurant in New York was upset when Gordon ridiculed him in his Kitchen Nightmares USA.   The fact that the restaurant was filled with rotten food and infested with cockroaches clearly hadnt passed Ramsay by.

The american said "Being ridiculed by Gordon Ramsay on TV has wrecked my life," he told the Daily Mail. "Gordon completely assassinated my character. My reputation is in tatters and nobody wants to employ me. It's like watching myself getting mugged."

The restaurant manager had clearly never watched Kitchen Nightmares before and obviously isnt aware of how Ramsay reacts to bad management or poor hygeine.

And this isnt the first time that someone has threatened to sue.  The episode featuring Bonepartes restaurant in West Yorkshire was a classic!

In June 2006, Ramsay won a High Court case against the London Evening Standard newspaper, which had alleged, after reports from previous owner Sue Ray, that scenes and the general condition of Bonaparte's had been faked for Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Ramsay was awarded £75,000 plus costs. Ramsay said at the time: "I won't let people write anything they want to about me. We have never done anything in a cynical fake way".

I've always liked Ramsays straight talking no-nonsense attitude and I'm particularly looking forward to his latest cookbook "Healthy Attitudes" which is released on 2nd May 2008.

Here is a brief synopsis...

What you are is what you eat and everyone wants to be healthy and look their best. Gordon Ramsay super-fit chef, marathon runner and high-energy television presenter is a great advertisement for eating well and staying in the peak of good health. For this third series of The F Word, he has put together over 100 dishes that are completely in tune with the way we want to eat today packed with fresh, vital ingredients cooked in the most healthy way to achieve maximum flavour. Geared around our daily lives he gives ideas and recipes for healthy breakfasts, lunches, barbecues, suppers, desserts, kids and entertaining, demonstrates healthy cooking methods that guarantee optimum flavour, and tells us which are his favourite healthy ingredients. Recipes include Mango and Smoked Chicken Salad, Griddle Squid with Roasted Peppers and Cannellini Beans, Wild Mushroom Risotto with baked Courgettes and Roasted Peaches with Vanilla and Spices. With its fresh, colourful photographs and clean modern design, this is a worthy follower to his hugely successful Fast Food and Sunday Lunch.

Maw Broon's Cookbook: The Broon's Cookbook - for Every Day and Special Days

Maw Broon's very own cookbook, borrowed from the sideboard at No. 10 Glebe Street, first made for her by her mother-in-law when Maw married Paw, and added-to over the years with recipes for every day and special days, from friends and neighbours and others that simply caught Maw's eye in The Sunday Post, or cut-out of the back of a flour bag. These are the very recipes that became the favourite dishes of the whole extended family, Maw and Paw, Granpaw, Daphne, Horace, Joe, Maggie, Hen, the Twins and the bairn.

Launched in 1936 in the "Sunday Post" in Scotland, The Broons are undoubtedly Scotland's first family - the Nation's favourites - with a readership covering all generations. The Broons 'annual' sells over 100,000 copies. This is a facsimile of Maw Broon's very own cookbook, which we borrowed from the sideboard at No. 10 Glebe Street - first made for her by her mother-in-law when 'Maw' married 'Paw', and added-to over the years with recipes for every day and special days, from friends and neighbours and others that simply caught Maw's eye in "The Sunday Post", or cut-out of the backof a flour bag. These are the very recipes that became the favourite dishes of the whole extended family - Maw and Paw, Granpaw, Daphne, Horace, Joe, Maggie, Hen, the Twins and 'the bairn'.The strip itself is still hugely popular, with the "Sunday Post" having a circulation of over 1,000,000 copies every week, and there are some examples of the strip from years gone by that Maw must have clipped into her Cookbook- perhaps as reminders of special days. We've just left the 'bits and pieces' that you find tucked into a cookbook, exactly as we found them - stains and all. "Maw Broon's Cookbook" is published at a time when nostalgia items are extremely popular, and although obviously firm favourites in Scotland, there will be interest nationwide, with support and endorsement from celebrity names - Gordon Ramsay, Lorraine Kelly, Ewan McGregor to name a few. The BBC's Robbie Shepherd and Tom Morton will lend a hand too! There will be promotion in DC Thomson's portfolio of newspapers and magazines - including "The Sunday Post", "The Courier", "The Scots Magazine", and "The People's Friend".
