Nebraska Junk Jaunt this Weekend

I am leaving Wednesday morning with my dog Chip to go saleing on the Nebraska Junk Jaunt.  This will be my third year of looking for treasures in Central Nebraska.   The weather last two years was cool, rainy and windy, but it looks like this year will be warm and sunny.

I stay in the same motel in Loup City with friends and this year will ride along with them.  It will be nice to be a passenger instead of driver for a change, so I can enjoy the scenery.  We will spend three days driving to the little towns on the two highways and going to the various sales.  Some set up on the side of the roads, others have tables in churches or community centers, fairground buildings or personal garages.

I return Sunday, so look for my finds next week!

Going Back to my College Education

I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Textiles and Clothing with a design and merchandising minor in the year 19xx (don't want to show my age!!!)  Every time I was assigned a project requiring historic costume, I chose the 1920s.  This love of the Roaring Twenties and the art deco style has evolved into any vintage clothing and accessories from the Victorian times to the 1960s.  The current show "Mad Men" on cable has really interested me in that era of early 1960s clothing.

I am going back to my passion for old clothes more and more when I shop at estate sales.  Gradually, I have offered some beautiful vintage clothing along with all my other antiques and collectibles.  I have decided to add even more vintage clothing to my auctions, so hopefully every Tuesday I will list auctions specifically related to Vintage Clothing and Accessories.  So, look for new items every Tuesday evening.

Here's a sampling of some beauties I have on auction right now.

My Kansas Oklahoma Saleing Trip

I get the urge to travel every now and then to look for new items to sell to my collectors.  I got an email from Frontier Airlines about their Weekend Web fares and found a cheap fare to Oklahoma City.   There was an antique flea market at the fairgrounds that weekend, so I decided to go since roundtrip airfare was about half of what I would have had to pay for gas if I drove.   So, I saled at the show after I arrived, then went to 3 antique malls.  The next day was spent saleing in Wichita, KS.  I found some wonderful things.   I will put them on auction in the next few days.

I especially like the Italian ceramic figurines I just listed.  The detail in these figurines is the best in the world of ceramic art.  Two are by Tizianno Galli and the other is by Carlo Mollica.   They are from the mid-1900s and very collectible.  Many of my Italian customers buy these to get them back into their country.

Another interesting estate sale

I went to an estate sale in Denver last Friday, not thinking I would find anything.  I went to see the house, which is in Arapahoe Acres in Englewood.   It is the first post-World War II residential subdivision listed as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places.  Constructed between 1949 and 1957, it is a community of 124 unique, modern homes.  The neighborhood association has a nice web site,  http://www.arapahoeacres.org/  I have driven the area, but was excited to see the inside of one of the homes.  I was surprised this house had such low ceilings.

The owner was an avid collector and sold on eBay, mostly dog figurines.  The man running the sale said that when he went in to appraise the estate, he found over 1500 dog figurines, 1500 cast iron toys, vintage Christmas, Halloween and Easter, and other wonderful old collectibles.  I asked him where did it all go?  She left no heirs, but before she died she researched her husband's side of the family and found a long lost cousin somewhere in the midwest.  So, most of it went to that person who didn't even know about her.  Estimated value was $3 million.  Can you imagine getting that phone call?  Talk about winning a lottery!

The proceeds of what was left at this sale will be donated to an animal charity MaxFund in Denver.  The few items I found at the sale are now listed and will end this Sunday and Monday.  Of note:  old porcelain dog figurines from Germany and vintage Halloween tambourine by Chein.

Interesting Estate Sale last weekend

I find the majority of my things at estate sales.  The first one I went to about 9 years ago took me by surprise.  I had no idea that after a person dies, someone comes into the house, goes through everything and prices it.  Then, strangers come into the house and buy that persons lifetime accumulation.   Usually, the name of the person is not mentioned, so it isn't so personal.  But, I went to one last weekend that really affected me.  I overhead one of the workers telling someone about the owner.  He took his dog to go fishing one day and never returned home because he drowned trying to save his dog.  He was an eBay and auction buyer and had enormous collections of militaria, pinbacks, tobacciana, ephemera and other guy stuff and started selling on eBay.  In an instant, his life ended and strangers were left to liquidate his estate.  Hundreds of people went through the house and his things were scattered all over Northern Colorado to many collectors, dealers and others.

I started thinking about my house, it's contents and what would someone think about coming into my house if I died suddenly.  I better get my affairs in order because you just don't know what will happen tomorrow.

I found a few things to sell and will be listing them this week.  My favorite is a notebook full of cigar box labels in mint condition and some Victorian trade cards.  The illustrations are so interesting and how these paper items survived intact all these years amazes me.
