I might be a meanie if...

This week I had to deal with a person who bid on one of my auctions and then contacted me about cancelling the bid. I have never had anyone ask me to do that before. Unfortunately I didn't feel that I needed to cancel the bid, and let it continue. This person was really nice whereas communication goes and that is a positive, I guess. My main concern was that this person should have read the description before bidding. In the description the item said what it was 5 different times and I also cautioned my bidders to please read it entirely before placing a bid. So, to make things complicated- at the end of the auction, this bidder was the high bidder and after being contacted refused to pay for the item. So sad. I had to place my first negative feedback.

I know that there are disappointments in the auction business, and today I really felt one. Not at the loss of money from this item, but from the fact that I had to leave negative feedback.

I hope that my future auctions are more successful and as I get better acquainted with how bidding/selling goes the actions will be more positive than negative.

I would have allowed them to cancel the bid if I were you. It's not worth the hassle of dealing with an non-paying buyer, especially if you have other bids. I didn't think that a buyer needed the seller's permission. I've never cancelled a bid, but I thought that if it was within so many hours of the end, they could retract.

We've had one cancelled bid - and no one asked our permission. Your bidder at least tried to communicate with you. Agree with rustybarb - not worth the bad feeling - let it go.

I didn't know anyone else in the world read Diane Mott Davidson - do you use her recipes too?

I agree with rustybarb.
IMO anytime you have a bidder who wishes to cancel and you do not allow it, you have high odds of nonpayment.
You will more than likely now recieve a negative which will hurt you probably a lot more than it will hurt them.

Some people just don't understand or accept that a bid is a contract. Guess that shouldn't surprise us with the amount of defaults on loans, etc. sweeping this country.

Why even have the confirmation step in the bid process if people don't stop and THINK before it's too late??

in the future perhaps you may want to re-think that....the bidder did contact you to let you know they wished to cancel their bid...it would appear that they are unfamiliar with how to retract their own bid themselves.....It could have been easily done on your part and may have kept the interest of the buyer for another time.....they may have remembered how nice you had been to them....

Unfortunately, lisa...along with that kindness, often comes an abuse of it.

the bidder should have been able to retract the bid themselves, but I still see no reason to not cancel the bid when you still had the chance to do so, and when they were polite and apologetic. That way the other person bidding would have got the item, and you wouldn't have opened yourself up for getting a negative of your own back.

I know madcat..:o) but the real upshot of it is now she may be looking at a return negative feedback that could have been avoided so simply...AND the item could have gone to the second bidder who problably would have paid with no problem...

Not a winning bid, madcat, a bid that's retracted before the end of the auction. That's what this seller is referring to. If they had won, it would be a whole different ballgame. But they bid, then decided they wanted to pull out. Just seems it would be the thing to do, rather than dealing with a non-paying bidder. This seller only has 15 feedback, and the item was only around $16.

a negative o the 15 feedback could REALLY hurt.... I just look for ways to avoid trouble when it is so easily done.....It could have been a win-win...

Yes, I reread and saw that, rusty, and I deleted my comment.
Ebay keeps track of retractions for a reason though because some bidders will abuse the option.

I had to report a buyer not long ago who was using the option as a means to opt out when they were winning. She had 22 retractions in a month!

I agree that in certain instances, it's preferable to nonpayment but at the same time, it can set a negative precedance.

Yeah, and she was a newbie...got suspended. She thought because she got away with it so many times that I had no choice but accept her retraction. She didn't count on being reported.

Ebay is a strange world.. it is the customer is always right to the extreme! The fear of the negative feedback!
I have cancelled bids.. If they don't want to bid.. cancel-- People don't pay attention! -They don't read carefully!
I have only left a negative feedback once.. for someone who never paid..
I don't like doing that unless all else fails.
good luck in the future..
