A New Thing

The Adult Swim & What Happend to the Good 'ole Cartoons

So, I was channel surfing the other day and came across this Adult Swim - Is it a channel or a series of cartoons?  Do adults really need to watch cartoons for entertainment?  Do we really have the time to do so?  Couldn't we make better use of our time?  I remember growing up and having The Smurfs, The Power Rangers, G.I. Joe, etc.  What happened to good cartoons?  I mean I have a young brother who tells me about this show with Jimmy Neutron, and all of these killing of characters on these T.V. shows.  I mean children need to be entertained but I mean cartoons use to be so innocent.  What happened??  Cartoons in today's age are so incredibly filled with blood, guts, and everything else!!  I mean put on Dora the Explorer...so what if Diego is gay and they're trying to teach you some Spanish - welcome to 2008, at least they aren't killing one another - and the most they do is meet a ghost on their travels - These same parents who need Dora banned are the same ones who don't mind their children being subject to the horrific cartoons of blood, killings, and everything else!

I've never heard of Adult Swim, but don't think I'd be interested in watching cartoons. I know that as a niave grammy, I turned on the Cartoon Network one time for my grandson, and he said, "ummm...grammy, I'm not allowed to watch that!" Gee, I thought cartoons were for kids! But apparently after 6:00, not so!

My husband and I were takiing about just this the other day. The little one was on the couch watching Tom and Jerry but only after we skimmed past dozens of cartoons that weren't what we were expecting a cartoon to be.

I watch some shows on adult swim. It comes on cartoon network late at night when they assume most kids are in bed.
Ban Dora? Who's banning Dora? It's a pretty annoying show and my kids make fun of it, but hey watch what you want.

I am sure that not all cartoons are so bad, but I mean when you here a 5 year old say Jimmy come look at this show, he's blowing up the family house, it's time to change the channel - I mean are there groups out there who are trying to clean out the airwaves - but how long does a process like that take - why do some parents allow their child to be subject to it - and others are a little smarter and want what's best for their child - I'd never heard of the Adult Swim before - and can honestly say that never again - and yes after a certain hour of the day/early evening one should not allow their child to watch cartoons.

Hey Eeyore,

There is a whole commitee - I'd have to look some more of parents who say that b/c Diego is gay on the Dora the Explorer show, it should be banned. While he never does anything about it, nor acts on it - so I don't get it.

Have a great day all!

hmmm. seems each parent should make those decisions for their own children to me. When you have cable, you can put parental controls on that block shows with certain ratings. I honestly don't want someone else choosing what my kids can watch.

Why yes it does guru.

Exactly! I think that a high parental control is very necessary - and it should be up to a parent - not the government!

Yes, they split apart but before Dora did have a Diego on her show - I'm sorry to hear that darleen that it matters.

I find it annoying that when I buy movies or video games, sometimes the cashier asks who it is for. I'm over 18. That's all they need to worry about. If I let my kids have it, that is my decision.

It matters to you that Jimmy Nuetron is blowing up a house but I can't let it matter to me if Diego is Gay.lolol Typical.

I never said that - it's up to a parent - I mean if blowing things up is ok why not a gay character (and that is the thing here) something that is fake - what's typical is a parent who will allow one but not the other - it depends on the culture around a person I guess - Both should matter. Things can matter to anyone!

Yes, Eeyore - if one buys something at a store and that person is of age, then that's the sale. Isn't a cashier suppose to just ring things up and say thanks! Now they give you the third degree

I just really want to know is Diego gay?

I don't think the blowing things up is ok either,we can just read the newspaper or watch the news and see these things being copycatted.

Since the last time I checked, the Diego character did not have a boyfriend, I would say no. My 7 yo will tell you that gay is when a boy wants to marry a boy or a girl wants to marry a girl. I don't think Diego qualifies.

At some point yes, I mena the Looney Tunes uses the good 'ole TNT - it was an example like when I was visting my family, my brother was watching that Jimmy Neutron show - what is the name of it anyways? He was using a toy gun and killing his family members.

well some thought tinky winky on teletubbies was gay. Or bert & ernie. If someone thinks sexual thoughts when they watch a children's show, it isn't the show that is the problem!

There wasn't even an episode where it happened.... :).....I guess the issue at hand was about different types of examples of what some parents will let their children watch compared to other shows and the valid reasons on both sides for allowing or not allowing certain things - Great convo - and no nothing personal - I wanted to see why is one ok and not the other.

I didn't say there was a problem with either. We do watch violent shows. We like horror movies. I don't care if the movie or show has a gay character. Heck my 7yo watched part of a science show I was watching about transexuals.

Yes, see here, now my prefrence for movies is horror - I guess there is nothing like a good scary movie! - I am not saying one is right and the other isn't either. I just think that eeyore you are absolutely right. If a person's thought is of a sexual nature whether it be outting a character, etc. during a cartoon of all things then that is the problem.

Which I think is an excellent idea - now is/are your child/children younger - or young adult(s)? I mean if a parent thinks that their child is ready for that then that's all that should be said. Not a movie theatre's policy - or the TV stations rating of a show.
