Honoring Our Fallen Hero'sPosted May-23-08 21:06:07 PDT I was born in the Philippines
and moved to the US when I was 5 years old. I was raised the "American
Way" yet never knew what that really meant. As I grew older and learned
US history, I still didn't comprehend what the big deal was and why
being an "American" was so great. I'm here legally, received the best
education and had become a successful person in my career. I learned to appreciate America when 3 events happened in my life: 1. I finally became an American Citizen 2. My Sister joined the Marines 3. September 11, 2001 Becoming a US Citizen ![]() For those of you who were born here, you will never completely understand or appreciate of being an American. I know there's a huge a issue with illegal immigrants, but as a legal immigrant that became a US Citizen, I know both sides of the story. Trying to get proper and legal paperwork then waiting years to become a citizen is a true hardship. As immigrants, we came to this country because of the tremendous opportunities that it can gives us and when used wisely, it will help us live a comfortable life. When I was finally informed that the day had come for me to take my vow, I was sooo excited. The day was finally here! When I took the vow in front of the judge, in front of my family and friends, I was so overwhelmed unexpectedly that I had to stop the tears rolling down my face. I had accomplished an event that not everyone can attain, and I'm DAMN PROUD OF IT. My Sister joining the Marines ![]() When my Sister joined the Marines, at first I couldn't believe it! I thought she was nuts! But it made her strong, independent, and smarter. She stayed for a few years and then went on with her life. It is something that she and my family will never forget. How hard it was for her to be far away from home when she was 18, meeting new people, being on her own, living in a different country, handling weapons, working behind the scenes with her officer in command, etc. It was a journey for all of us. She started about 15 years ago and stayed with the Marines for 6 years. We were blessed that she was done at the right time because the Gulf War had just begun. We were grateful for that. September 11, 2001 ![]() This will always be a day that no one in America or the world will ever forget. As an American, I was horrified, sadden, and then furious! This was one event that every person that I knew, every race and of every color, had united together as one. As we approach Memorial Day, Please do not forget about our Fallen Hero's and our current Military Hero's. I know that this holiday had been taken for granted by many of us. We see it as a paid business holiday, a long weekend, and the start of summer. But do not forget to Honor the men and women who gave up their lives so that we may have freedom and liberty. Who fought in wars and battles that many people cannot fight. Who to this day still fight for us, to protect us from terrorism, help keep our country free, and help us sleep safe at night. So if you know someone or see a military personal, let them know you appreciate them by just saying "Thank You. You're doing a Great Job and I Appreciate it!". Shake their hand, give them a Hug, or even a card. We have many soldiers over seas, please don't forget to send them emails, care packages, and mail. I remembered my Sister telling me that every card and letter is cherished because it is a piece of home and home is where the heart is. If you know a Fallen Hero, stop by their resting place and leave a flower, say a little prayer, and say "Thank You for giving your life so that I may live mine". You're probably thinking that its silly, but don't forget that Fallen Hero's become Angels and they finally went home. ![]() Thank You for Reading. Jesse
