Taking Advantage of Groups on eBay

So many people ask me how to get started on eBay. I do give them as much helpful info as I can but I also tell them to make sure to visit the groups page in the Community area. When I have a question about something or want to see if someone is having a similar problem, that is where I go for info. Most times I get my answer there.

One thing I find very nice is when people take time to post their tips and problem-solvers from which others may learn. I always appreciate that and find it very helpful. In addition, it is fun to socialize a bit. I joined some groups for my state and one in particular has been enjoyable. We not only share tips but we also share great sales, problem customers and much more.

Before I really started selling much on eBay I read so much on the groups. I had dozens of questions and I didn't find eBay to be particularly helpful in answering them. It has since improved as far as info but, at the time, it just wasn't helping me much. However, reading over the various forums gave me all the background I needed to get started selling.

I still have occasional questions and only once have I had to look outside eBay for an answer. Otherwise it is all right there: in the groups area. It is a rare question which has not already been asked so generally speaking, you should be able to track down help somewhere there.

Some tips for using the boards:

  • read over the posts FIRST and do a search for several different ways of saying what you want to ask before you post to make sure it isn't a repeat question
  • put your subject clearly in the title. It is very annoying when someone posts something such as "help I have a problem" because it doesn't give the other members enough to know if they want to read it or not both for the purposes of answering it and for looking for answers themselves
  • make sure you are on the right group for your question. Look over ALL the groups and find one that most closely relates to your problem. If it is a shipping problem, you should be on that board. A store issue, go to the store group, etc.
  • state your problem clearly and briefly. Don't go on and on with endless details. All that does is confuses the issue. If you have a problem with a specific sale or product put the link up so others can go see what you are talking about.
  • be polite - people are trying to help you and it is free advice. However, keep in mind, you get what you pay for at times. There will be some people who are just plain rude and condescending. Be the adult and ignore them. Thank others for their help.

Try joining some social groups, too, or even starting one. They aren't always very busy but they can be fun. The group I belong to met in person this past summer. Unfortunately, I had to miss it because of dh's work party but it sounds as if they will do it again and I intend to go this time! It would be fun to talk to other eBayers who enjoy it as much as I do!
