Fake: Forgery, Lies and eBay by Kenneth Walton

I saw this book in the NEW BOOKS section of our local library (our version of browsing a bookstore) and of course I grabbed it. A fast read and interesting. I thought the author rationalized his deception and greed abit, but it was a good cautionary tale.

Has anyone else read it and if so what did you think?

I've finished the book and returned it to the library! Try YOUR library and see if they have a copy - if not, request they get a copy.

The author wound up being prosacuted. This was eBay of 1999, and I wonder how eBay handles things differently now re: mulitple ID's etc.

Ken Walton, unhappy lawyer looking for meaning in his life, meets up with old army buddy - swarmy character - whose lifestyle and income far exceeds our unhappy lawyer. How does he do it? Sells art on eBay. Goes to thrift shops and Goodwill and buys cheap art and then sells. Unhappy lawyer (Ken) gets involved and the story takes off from there.

Fascinating fast-paced story of snarky ethics of some ebay users (both sellers *and* buyers) but bogs down in final third after author is nailed by fed; later chapters read like an epic pity party that gets old really fast. Interestingly, one major issue is never addressed--just how much did eBay benefit financially from all this chicanery which they basically allowed to happen??? Hhhmmm. . .
