Painted Violins For Sale (anyone?)Posted Mar-10-08 08:55:29 PDT One idea struck me. People sponsor a cheap violin for USD50. This covers the violin cost as well as the cost to bring the violins to poor children who cannot afford to pay for their school fees. This happens to people in many parts of China like Gansu area. When I visited an exhibition that showcased them having to cross rivers and some mountains just to go to school everyday (and back!), I was close to tears. Since then this has always been a close issue to me. I'm thinking of doing something meaningful this year. Just want to know anyone would sponsor a violin for USD50. After I collect about 20 violins sponsorship, I will go to these poor villages and hold a violin painting competition. The 20 violins will then be auctioned here, and the proceeds go to help the child who painted the violin. I intend to also put up a website to track this (little) movement so everyone can see the development of this programme. Everything starts small I guessed. But with support I believe this can grow to something larger and meaningful for everyone. --Jehpin Why China has so little Master Violin Makers (my opinion of course)Posted Mar-10-08 08:47:11 PDT Updated Mar-10-08 08:47:38 PDT In China, in my travels, it is never possible to find a violin made entirely by the same maker. This is because there is no local market to sustain them, unlike European countries where people will pay for USD10,000 for a new violin easily. Hence the European master makers can make 12 violins a year. In China, a maker must make at least 30 violins per month to survive. Hence he specialised in the most critical one: whitebox making and setup. You can observe my master violins. I only sell them about once a month. These are the special violins made from beginning to end by the same maker. These are harder to come by. Just my 2 yuan (climbing everyday), --Jehpin Hello World!Posted Mar-10-08 08:44:06 PDT I guess I need to test this out. First entry. Double Carriage Return above. |
