Q:

I am very interested in your product. I recently bought an SX-70 and have wondered the best way to use 600 film in the camera. This looks great, my only concern is that from your images, the pack filter looks very scratched. Do they scratch easily? How many film packs can you use the filter with before it is not usable anymore? Do the scratches show up in the image? Thank you in advance.

A:

The scratches are in the surface of the laminate, NOT on the filter, itself. The film cannot see them...only the digital camera in the angled light. I have not been able to wear one out yet, in spite of testing every one of the hundreds of SX-70's I sell, and it can be cleaned if it gets too many fingerprints, etc., on it with warm water and a bit of dish detergent.

Q:  Hi, I already bought this and I tried using it in my polaroid sx-70 and it ejected it from the film on the first use. does this mean that i didn't push it in all the way? and if the filter is in there, i don't know much about the camera itself, but how do the rollers eject the film without ejecting the filter? sorry, just a little confused and i really want to use it properly without wasting any more film. thanks! A:

No problem! Your analysis is correct. It is not in far enough. It must NOT protrude more than 1 mm from the end of the pack, or the rollers will grab it and eject it. You might have to help it with a fingernail, but it MUST go under the back edge of the pack. if it ejects even then, it's time for the tape trick! I made it that long so you could get it out easily for spectacular flash shots...but that was probably a mistake, and the next production run will be shorter, so that it will go all the way in and under the edges of the pack. The film ejects without the filter because there is a little "pick" that comes down in the area of the notch and pushes the film or dark slide into the rollers, which then eject it. Keep me posted! You can get the dark slide back in...just make sure you put the little tab in first on the side with the notch.

Q:  Hi, I want to buy this box type Polaroid (#130152374244). Is this Packfilter applicable on this Polaroid? Thanks! Sep-13-07
A:  Yes! The PackFilter will work on ANY camera that was made to use Time Zero or SX-70 film! Thanks for asking. The old camera will live again!

Battling Marshmallows......and Losing!

Going to battle with any part of government is like having a fight with a plate of marshmallows....and losing!  Or, as a friend of mine stated, so succinctly, it's like goosing butterflies....

It appears that Post Offices, worldwide, are all about the same -- and none of them anything to be proud of.  Here, with the "New, Improved" [and vastly more expensive, yet less user-friendly] new rates and services, I have found that between 5% and 8% of everything I ship never arrives.  That's a real problem, when buyers have paid good money and expect to receive their items -- with no one but me to blame for non-receipt...and then PayPal encouraging that with their dispute and refund process, which charges me instead of the guilty party!  Buyer protection, all right!

Of course, I could use Global Priority Mail, and pay for insurance, the least cost of which would more than triple the price of the little PackFilters I've been depending upon for my income!  And, with the new, improved Postal Rates and Services, I now have to put stamps on everything that ISN"T a premium service, instead of getting it done in my PayPal account on-line.

Something amazing today....my carrier brought me an envelope with two sets of PackFilters, which had been sent to a customer in Hong Kong on June 16th [80 days ago -- I love the irony], with the notation, "incomplete address".  This is First Class Air Mail, with a computer-generated, printed label from the information on the My eBay page.

Actually, it's the only thing that has ever been returned.  I guess any others are just thrown away, because I've had to replace quite a few non-received items for good will and fear of bad feedback!  I'd sure hate to see what happens to 2nd Class Mail.....

This is symptomatic of what has happened to and with governments everywhere.  They exist -- in spite of the good intentions of our Founding Fathers -- strictly for THEIR OWN perpetuation, protection and expansion, rather than for that of their constituencies.  It has nothing to do with parties -- ALL politics and political practitioners are simply self-serving parasites, as are their appointees and other hacks cohorts.  Any with higher motives or genuine dedication are swept aside in the tide of power-gathering and personal aggrandizement.

I wish I weren't too old and feeble to lead a revolution!  Nothing less will recover our freedom and human dignity.

.......now I feel better!

More, through the end of August....

Q:  another question, do i have to put in a new packfilter for every picture? Aug-25-07
A:  Not at all! I made it very durable, so that it can be used in many, many packs of film. I haven't worn one out yet...and it can be washed in dish detergent and dried carefully, if it gets grubby from handling. I include 3 in a set in case you lose one or otherwise mess one up beyond redemption. Don't worry about scratches -- they are in the protective, laminated superstrates and the Polaroid film can't see them.

Q:  ok just to be sure... if i am to purchase and install the filter, then i can use 600 and 779 film on my sx-70 100%? Aug-24-07
A:  Yup! You just have to install it carefully according to instructions provided.

Q:  Hey there, do you know any user doing this mod with a "Polaroid Land 1000 Cam" ? This cam usually uses SX70 Film so shouldn't be a difference, right? Other questions: Do you have experience shipping to germany? How many days must I calculte for shipping? Thanks a lot in advance. Best regards, Marcel Aug-24-07
A:  Marcel, I ship most of my PackFilters outside of the US. Likewise most of my SX-70's and accessories. I have hundreds of them! Allow up to 30 days for First Class Airmail to reach any foreign location, unless you are willing to buy either a large quantity of PackFilters [I have a wholesale price list for 25 sets and up], where you can get Priority Mail, with delivery in 4-6 days, for $29.95 plus insurance. Otherwise, Priority Mail for 1-10 sets of PackFilters will cost you $12.95, but no insurance is available. The US Postal Service is a joke!

Questions from the week ending July 28th

Question & Answer Answered On
Q:  I am interested in buying this.I would like to ask you a quesiton about this item. Does it fit to the orginial model? Jul-23-07
A:

Thanks for asking! The PackFilter will fit any Polaroid camera that was designed to use SX-70 or TimeZero film

Q:  With the pack filter you can use this over and over or do I need to buy more? Jul-21-07
A:

Each one should last through many packs of film. I send three in a package, so you're all set for quite a while! Thanks for the business.

Q:  Very informative, but I have a couple questions. I have a Polaroid 690 camera, which was about the top of the line of the Polaroid cameras. Do I need the filter pack to use 600 film? And then what about the 600 & 779 film? This issue of SX-70 film has me confused. Thanks. Hank Jul-20-07
A:

Hank, if you have an SLR 690, you DO NOT need a PackFilter! It was made to use either 600 [the inexpensive consumer version] or 779 [the supposedly superior professional version] from the get-go! It all has to do with the ASA or DIN rating of the film, which is how fast it gathers light that comes through the lens. The SX-70 camera is set for relatively slow ASA 150 film, which is no longer available. Your camera is set for ASA 640 film, which is the rating of both 600 and 779. Unfortunately, none of the cameras was adjustable in terms of its light sensitivity...hence the PackFilter, to make the old cameras think that the "hot" new film you put in is really as slow as the old stuff! Did that help? Hope so, even though it means no business for me! But if you ever want to get rid of the 690, just get hold of me!

Q:  Very impressive wording but being a photographer, how is it that you don't have better pictures and explanation of the filter pack??? I would love to understand whow the thing works before buying; I understanf your frustration with old USAPO, they do loose things Jul-18-07
A:  I don't see anything wrong with the pictures! I'm NOT a photographer; I'm an inventor and a seller of SX-70's and accessories. The photographs are there simply to show that the PackFilter works. As a photographer, you should know why! If you can explain it any better, please do, so that I can share it with others. Do read my eBay blog, where I try to answer questions from people as best I can. The best explanation I have for a non-technical layman to read is that the PackFilter makes the old camera think it has ASA 150 film in it, instead of ASA 640. Many thanks for your interest.

Q:  hi. i bought some packfilters from you in the past and they worked great. then, for no reason, i started to have a problem with the camera ejecting the filter with the film. i thought it was just not inserted properly so i made sure it was pushed in all the way, the notch was on the correct side, and even tried it on another one of my sx-70 cameras. do you know what is wrong or how i can fix this? thanks for your time!! Jul-16-07
A:

First, let me suggest that you [and everyone else] review the blog I set up to post all the questions. Just click on my eBay seller name, and it will take you there. The PackFilter may have picked up some chemical from a film, as it passed under, or something else might be making it stick to the film. It's OK to wash it off in warm water and mild detergent. What I suggest, though, is a little piece of transparent tape on the back edge of the pack, that just goes over enough to catch a tiny bit of the PackFilter. Make sure it has good contact, and it should stay in place. Keep me posted!

Q:  hello! thanks for the fast delivery. i now have my camera and 600 film and have placed the filter in the film pack atop the black slide card and have nicked the center notches and placed the film in the camera. it promptly spit out the filter rather than the black film card. is this correct? i am thinking the filter should remain in the pack. should i open the camera, place the filter atop the black card and try again? or is the filter suppose to spit right out. thanks, and appreciate your help. Jul-13-07
A:

You figured it out! Good job.

Q:  hey, never mind. duh. i just read mary's comments about the packfilter pushing out, so i'm going to give pushing it in further a try. then i'll tape if necessary. gracias. Jul-13-07
A:

No sweat. Remember...we're doing something that wasn't intended, so neither the camera nor the film pack were designed for this! We're sorta' sneaking by! Remember...the PackFilter should NOT stick out more than 1 mm from the pack, and has to go all the way UNDER the back edge of the pack [but OVER the dark slide]. If it persists in popping out, just a little piece of transparent tape will convince it to stay in! Have fun...and thanks for taking the trouble to ask!

Q:  Hey there! I have a One Step Polaroid Land Camera that says it needs sx-70 film to work...are you pretty much saying that I can use this filter along with 600 series film, instead of the sx-70? I've just had this camera forever and haven't been able to get sx-70 film for a reasonable price. Thanks so much! Jul-11-07
A:  Yup! Thanks for asking.
