Things That are Loved May Last Longer!

We are not in a financial place to buy precious things and then display them in our many china closets or cases.  We mostly use any collectible or antiques we buy. Yes, it may show wear or get damaged in the process, but we will have enjoyed it in the meantime! Life is too short to hide away things that mean something. My husband Steve is from a farming background, and we have his great-grandmother's "potato bowl" that is from Germany, and her cruet set that has multi-colored pieces. It is rare, and it is beautiful. We see it every day.  The bowl comes out for family celebrations, as do some other pieces, and our children hear the history each time. OR they remind us of it, which makes us smile.  I have my great-grandmother's incredible tablecloth that was given to me after her death in a very sorry state.  Stained, yellowed and stiff with age, I kept it but certainly didn't want to use it.  Then I discovered a copy of Watkin's "Household Hints" from 1941, and they said to revive your yellowed linens by boiling them in cream of tartar!  At first I laughed, then tried it.  Amazed, I put it out of the clothesline, and my hubby came in saying "Where did that cool tablecloth come from?" The yellow disappeared, and the detailed stitches, tatting and buillion work became visible. Stains remained, but who cares? We cover them with dishes. That comes out for celebrations too, and both sides of our family history is represented. There is of course, more than this, but since this is my first entry in this blogging thing, I will end. Don't hide your family history, enjoy it!  Reenie
