Are Yardsales becoming obsolete?

Are Yardsales becoming obsolete,
how many did you pass by this year?   Were you like me, convincing yourself not to stop.  Did you scream silently as you drive by, I should not be going to the yardsale, I should be having a yardsale!!

Being a native of Maine, I have seen many a yard sale come and go.   There were even a few years where it seemed every yard in Maine was covered with  yard sale merchandise.  A few yards in Maine look like  they are having a  yard sale year round and it can be embarassing to stop and ask how much for say that old Pink Flamigo on a stick, and find out that it is not for sale, they are not having a yard sale, and in fact they just got done decorating their lawn!  But that is  the  way some days go when  scouting for the best deal.

This year was different than the past as far as real yard sales go, there were very few of note being held.  OK, so the weather this summer did not cooperate, too much rain, but still....when it came to Labor Day  WOW  I wish I had a yard sale on that day!!!  Eveyone  was cruising up and down the streets, riding from town to town looking for the deal of the century, it was amazing.  It felt like everyone had coodinated to sell and buy on that day!!   Deals were made, attics were cleared, and all was so fun !!!
The next day, nothing, no sales, no buyers, that was it.  It was as if the bulk of people were packed and driving out of state the day after labor Day!!!  I think they all found such good deals that they cut their vacations short to drive their finds back home before the people they bought from, find them and want their "memories" back!

This is the first year that I have seen such an exodus occur, so if you missed the big sale day, come back for the Indian Summer and shop some more.  When is that, you ask, well here in Maine after the summer ends and the cold nights start, we always get a warm to hot spell just before the killing frosts.  Lets see, I think Indian Summer this year is this weekend only.  "Yep, I heard hot wetha comin this weekend"  So change your plans and head north...if you don't find a good yardsale, you will see the most beautiful scenery you ever laid eyes on as the leaves turn all bright with splashes of color everywhere!!

Can't make it to Maine, do not worry, Maine is coming to you via EBAY.  I heard it said so many times this summer that I just have to pass this message on.  Most people found yardsaling to be a lot of work, with little return.  Good for the buyer, bad for the seller, but probably the reason so few yardsales were around is ...EBAY.  It is much easier to sell on EBAY and you do not have to give up a day to sit with all you have accumulated piled around you for the nieghbors to point at.  Many here in Maine have decided to take their yardsale to EBAY.  More exposure, less time spent selling, and a much better chance at making the sale!
Even antique dealers and collectable shops are becoming wise to the worldly ways of selling, most are putting a few of their wares on EBAY everyday!!!

Yardsales in Maine are becoming obsolete, how about your state?  Here in Maine we are known for our frugile ways and our ability to not waste a darn thing.   We are still collecting to much to prepare for that day it is not available but the age of computers is filtering north and many of us are finding it less time consuming and more profitalbe to EBAY!!
So if you do not see a yard sale going on, chances are that household just got a computer and they are frantically trying to post all they can to EBAY before heading to the "game".  It sure beats hauling everything out onto the lawn, cursing the day you bought it, and praying someone likes what you used to like enough to load it into their car.  And who has the gas to speculate with these days anyway!

I have decided, the majority of Mainers are right.
Don't miss the yardsale that goes on all year. Thats right, wouldn't it be great if yard sales went year round!!!!  Well the closest you will ever come is right here on EBAY!

So you see, most of the deals in Maine are still good deals, just that now you do not have to waste a lot of gas driving from yard to yard, looking for the deal, just sit down to your computer and type EBAY

I live north of NYC and tried putting up a few tag sale signs up on a weekend this summer. My 3rd floor tenant moved to North Dakota and left almost EVERYTHING she owned + enough wortless garbage to fill a 20 yard dumpster.

Most of the people who stopped were so mean and nasty that I would never do it again. If I had a .75 cent sticker price on a new item that sells for between $5-$10 in a local store, they wanted it for 25 cents. Even a senior police officer in an official car stopped by and gave me a hard time about a small Hitchcock repro table. He finally got it for $3.00 and I'm lucky I don't have to go out and hire a lawyer to defend me on an assault charge. I wanted to throw it through his windshield. It's a lot easier to sell stuff on eBay!

BUT, it costs so much to live here that the time and effort required to sell lower priced stuff on eBay isn't worth it. It's more practical to put a lot of good things in the car and drop them off at Goodwill. Are they any places left in Maine near the ocean that are affordable? I would love to live in a place where people treat each other with a little courtesy.

Hi Constance thanks for commenting! That is awful that you met up with so many mean people! There are plenty of good deals left here in Maine and there is always room for good people to join our peaceful area! Hope you can visit Maine and decide what area you like best, it is so diverse! If you like the coast, then you would have to decide what area on the coast some are real busy near cities and other in total solitude! Hope ya get a chance to look up, down heya, I'm sure we have the most beautiful skies in the world! We do have the first sunrise in the Eastern U. S. I think!!
