Les Mizre-ment

As I've said before, I'm a musicals nut. This summer my family went to a regional production of Les Miserables. So when I unpacked the beautiful Princess Tea Sets from Re-Ment this week, including the silver candelabras offered in this week's auctions, my dad couldn't help but remember the bishop in the prologue of Les Miz, where the bishop lets Jean Valjean get away with stealing his silver and hands the pair of silver candlesticks to Valjean, "You left the best behind... You must use this precious silver to become an honest man..."

The new Princess Tea product from Re-Ment has a golden candelabra as well, with beautiful golden flatware and gold-edged cups to match. Look for it in the playscaleminis auctions!

Vote in the Re-Ment Photo Contest

The Re-Ment International crew put together a photo contest where the only rule was to keep it Re-Ment only. They posted the entries today and asked for votes on the favorite. The staff will also choose two additional winners. Check it out by August 15th at this link and see how 30 people (myself included) used Re-Ment.

Yes, I entered ;-)  It's no surprise that I love Re-Ment products. I like the detail, I like the creativity of the false product labels (especially if it's something a little risque in English), and I like the variety of the items they make. I like mixing and matching with my own handmade items for Playscale dolls. And I like to make and photograph scenes, although I rarely have the time to do that. Well, when there's an incentive like a CONTEST, I make a little time.

My contest entry is #25, called "Homework Time." It shows a table set with snacks for both Mom and Daughter, plus her homework and Mom's book. Her math lesson is about scale - her homework is to measure everyday items to convert into 1:6 scale. They've kicked off their shoes and set their bags down - Mom's purse with wallet sticking out, Daughter's school bag with ballet class outfit. I made the tiled floor myself and wrote in the notebook; everything else is 100% Re-Ment, and available with auctions from PlayscaleMinis.com

Playscale Broadway

My other not-so-secret passion is Broadway Musicals. I even host a weekly radio program with showtunes. This might explain why I was so happy when a year or more ago Mattel came out with the new set of Wizard of Oz dolls, complete with a Wicked Witch of the West doll looking nothing like Margaret Hamilton's crone. Instead, she's a pretty witch, looking remarkably like Elphaba in Wicked. I've customized my box to showcase the official Wicked logo and giving the witch her 'proper' name.

Of course, Elphie's not the only Broadway-appropriate doll out there. Mattel and Disney also brought back Mary Poppins, this time with Bert and the kids, a great match for kids who loved seeing the Disney/Cameron Macintosh production. The High School Musical dolls are a hot pick for kids going to the touring live show (coming soon to a stage near you). But it wasn't until our most recent Broadway pilgrimage that I made more connections between Playscale fashion dolls (Mattel) and Broadway.

One non-matinee day in New York last week, I made a point of going to FAO Schwartz and Toys R Us Times Square.  Both had the aforementioned Mary Poppins and Wizard of Oz dolls (although Elphie has been long sold out). There was Grease - from the movie, but you know from "You're the One That I Want" that a revival is running right now. And I got a good look at the "Jazz Baby" dolls - the ones with Mattel's answer to Tonner's jointability - and finally realized it's an homage to Chicago. Except the dolls are wearing a scant more clothing  than the actresses. ;-)

Last summer, PlayAlong released a line of Hairspray fashion dolls to go with the film; Toys R Us still has the Tracy Turnblat available, and I've seen more on eBay.  Come to think of it, those skanky Top Model Barbie's look quite a bit like the outfits in Rent. At the Radio City Music Hall gift shop they sell "Rockette" dolls that look like they came from the dollar store. (When our children's theater presented The Snow Queen, the director found a whole slew of "Winter Queen" dolls from a dollar store and sold them for a little more at the concessions stand - a very popular fundraiser!)  MGA made a Shrek Fiona doll that might get more interest when Shrek the Musical hits Broadway later this year. I wonder if a reason the Barbie Legally Blonde 2 doll price skyrocketed is because of the Legally Blonde musical? Then of course, Disney's Princess musicals Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast have always had doll tie-ins. No such luck for the beautiful costumes and artistry of Lion King on Broadway - does Disney think that kids and collectors are not interested, or is it more a question of rights on Julie Taymor's inspired masks and designs?

So I've got a question: What other shows on Broadway, past or present, would be excellent tie-ins with Fashion Dolls? Who has made their own custom dolls of musical theater figures? Please send me photos if you have a Phantom of the Opera or his lady-love Christine Daae, one of the beautiful Edwardian costumes from The Secret Garden, South Pacific's Nellie Forbush in the sailor outfit, or any other of your favorite characters!

Re-Ment Secret Sets

One of the special things about opening a brand-new 10-box set of Re-Ment is the rare chance that one of those little boxes contains a "Secret Set." These are special surprises from the Re-Ment designers who create an additional set that fits in the general collection's theme, or a special color version of one of the "regular" sets in the collection.

At a Doll Show recently, I shared my table with the good friend who introduced me to Re-Ment in the first place. She was checking my boxes of Re-Ment sets and marking which set it contained. Once she realized that there was a chance of discovering a Secret Set, she couldn't stop opening boxes!

Some of these Secret Sets wind up for sale occasionally here on PlayscaleMinis.com. It's great fun looking at them and holding them is almost surreal. Someone has catalogued all of the sets and the secret sets here but since many of us in the states don't read Japanese, a group of Re-Ment fans set up a Flickr pool. Take a look at these astounding miniatures and see what you think!

The Scoop on Kitchen Littles - the Return!

Earlier this year (2008) International Playthings unveiled the return of Kitchen Littles, a Barbie-sized  kitchen set and food accessories. There's a long history to this product, and  it's still fondly remembered by many toy and Playscale aficionados. I've heard  there were red sets, but the ones I've seen were white with purple handles or  trim. Add two AA batteries and the stove sizzled with bacon, the ice dispenser  worked, etc. Now they're back, and they're pinker than before.

Yes, pink. The new stove, the fridge, the counters, the pantry, they're a deep fuscia.  They still open, they still have the lights and the working items, the stove  still comes with a breakfast set, but the kitchenware is all accented in blue  not pink.

The new items were on display at the Pomona Toy Show in March, and I got an up-close inspection  of the line. I'm spoiled by Re-Ment - these are definately toys meant to be  played with by kids, not collector miniatures. The pots and pans are again just  a touch too big for Barbie and friends scale. The plastic used for the food  is different than Re-Ment's resin, these food items feel a little rubbery.

I admit I was also disappointed in the countertops. The counter is a single lower cabinet with  two skinny drawers and doors. Yes, they work, but I'd have to buy three or four  of them to have a normal kitchen. The modular design of this may mean that a  dishwasher unit is on Kitchen Littles' back burner (pun only slightly intended)  but that's just a guess.

One nice addition to the line is the pantry carrying case. The handle on top makes it easy to  carry around the accessories, and fits right into the play area when not going  places. As the photo shows, there are six smaller drawers and one big drawer  for appliances, etc. This wasn't available for viewing so I couldn't see if  the drawers are sturdy plastic, I'd like to hear from anyone who gets them early!

Like the former set, these toys aren't cheap. When they're available at the end of April (at  least that's the plan) you'll see the Deluxe Refrigerator with Accessories selling for just under $30, the Stove just under $25, the cabinet/countertop just under  $20, and the various food sets ranging from $20 to just under $10. There's a  breakfast, lunch, dessert, snack, pizza, popcorn, and birthday sets. The sample  popcorn set was already well used by the time I got to see it, two days into the toy show. The popcorn popper is a covered bowl with a crank, and inside  are pellets (styrofoam?) that will "pop" around when the crank turns.  Unfortunately, static electricity sticks the pellets to the clear plastic lid.  I don't think the lid comes off to discharge the electricity and get the pellets  back into the bowl and crank where they belong.

So kudos to International Playthings for finding a way to get Kitchen Littles back into kids' hands. But  collectors be warned - these are toys. They do seem sturdy, the cookware is  still made out of metal, but overall they just don't have the realism I'm looking for. Or maybe I'm just not in the pink. If you have and enjoy the new Kitchen  Littles line, or want me to start offering them for sale, please email me at  play at playscaleminis.com.
