Dragon Boat Festival

Hi Everyone! Just wanted to let you all know that next Tuesday (June 19) is Dragon Boat Festival. That means that Monday and Tuesday are holidays, so if there are any pending deliveries, we will ship your items first thing Wednesday morning. We're sorry for the delay, and hope you understand.

Here's some information about the Dragon Boat Festival - in the Chinese lunar calendar, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. On this day, people watch dragon boat races and eat a traditional food called zongzi, a sort of dumpling made of savory rice and meat wrapped in bamboo leaves (think of them as rice tamales).

The festival supposedly commemorates Qu Yuan, a great Chinese poet. He was considered a great patriot who fought against curruption and was thus exiled by evil government officials. When he was exiled, he threw himself into a river and drowned. When the local villagers heard he was drowning, they rushed to him in their boats but arrived too late to save him. The dragon boat races are supposed to commemorate the villagers' actions. The villagers also worried that river creatures would eat his body, so they wrapped rice in bamboo leaves and threw these packages into the river, asking the creaters to eat these packages instead of the poet's body. So that's how the tradition of zongzi came about.

Whether this story about the origins of the festival are true or not, it's definitely a festive time here in Taiwan. Families and friends gather to watch exciting races and eat delicious zongzi.
