Most Recent Posts Simple is as Simple DoesPosted Aug-03-08 08:35:20 PDT Updated Aug-03-08 08:42:20 PDT The term "simple" is thrown around pretty loosely today. Every new gadget and gimmick that comes onto the market promises to "simplify" our lives. In actuality, much of what is promised by these new items and new technology do no such thing. In fact, they do the exact opposite. They create entirely new dependences (complications) for our lives. I don't want to sound like a "utilitarian", "socialist" or "romantic" philosopher. I'm not talking about abstract "systems" of ideology. Those things may have had some value in the process of obtaining a truly "liberal education", in learning to think. What I am talking about are the practicalities of daily life. One such "practical" step is significantly downsizing my library. Many works from those "schools of philosophy" mentioned above may be part of what I list here on eBay and on Half.com in the near future. I can talk about "simplifying" all day long... on and on and on..... In the end, it's not what I think, but what I do. I can read philosophical systems about "simplicity". I can even read about the lives of great ascetics who reached levels of purity of heart that I could never even dream of. Reading, thinking, dreaming, reading, thinking, dreaming.... Simple is as simple does. But what happens when I actually start the process of "doing"? |
