Last night I worked on three new teen monster aceo cards. I'm pretty excited about them. One is the Oops monster sleeping. Of course, he's sleeping with a stuffed pink bunny. I love it when fledgling teens are snoozing because you can still catch them in the act of being a child. It's so fleeting but it's still there. I'm having so much fun with the Oops monster. He reminds me of Nosferatu!

The other two teen monsters are those "you can't make me" moments that all teens (and toddlers for that matter) experiment with from time to time. The first one has his arms folded and is trying not to crack a smile (because teens are very serious, you know). The other has his arms folded, feet firmly planted as he tries out the classic "you can't make me"! I recall an old Gilligan's Island episode where Gilligan was saying "You can't make me. You can't make me." I think they were going to dress him up as a pin up girl like Ginger...my brain fails me these days!

As I was drawing I really started to miss Toby. He'll be home on Sunday but he's been gone for three whole weeks this summer! I've maybe spoken to him 3 times. He sort of misses us but he's having a great time. He says, you know how I am. His little sister, Anie, wondered "Does Tobo (her nickname for him) miss me?" Even though he gets in these moods where she's his prey victim and he torments her mercilessly, she still misses him terribly.

The teen monsters series came to life recently as I found myself in the midst of the frustrating and humorous position of parenting a fledgling teenager. I decided the only way I (and my son, Toby) were going to survive this transition was to rely heavily on my art.   Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting more teen monsters. My son has been out of town lately, surfing in Santa Barbara (tough life!), and I am poised with paintbrush in hand for new moments of shock and awe. Last week, Toby tried to convince me that it wouldn't be so bad if a five foot reef shark took a nibble of him. Sheesh. From shark bites to tormenting his 3 year old sister, Anie, I'll have plenty to keep you entertained, horrified, amused, who knows?!
