POLITICAL NEWS YOU CAN USE: Senate taking up "global energy security" act this week.Posted Jun-03-08 09:29:17 PDT Updated Jun-03-08 09:30:02 PDT Friends & readers: We have thus far avoided talking about the political aspects of self-reliance--including that current hottie: global warming, climate change, etc. The U.S. Senate this very week (2-6 June) is debating Senate Bill 2191...basically, purporting to establish a "cap & trade" CO2 emissions cap within the U.S. I have severe reservations about this bill...as should you...even apart from any questions or concerns about the global warming debate. Still, I encourage you to engage with your appropriate congressman or senator, whether you support this bill, or not. One thing I can promise you, though: if S. 2191 is passed, production costs for EVERYTHING produced, consumed, used, transported, traded, bought or sold in the United States will skyrocket. Whether you think this is good, or whether you think it is bad...it will be what it will be. One important corollary question is: how might it effect you, and what should you do about it?? Think wisely about your long-term needs...and consider purchasing certain items NOW, before these indirect carbon taxes come into effect. And remember: part of the intent of this bill is to make it uneconomical to ship items over long distances--the idea is to drive up transportation costs, forcing folks to "buy local" in order to reduce cO2 emissions. This will happen whether you're pro- or anti- "environment." So--what can you buy, now, that you may not be able to buy once carbon taxes come into effect??
Think about it, make some considered decisions, and buy products accordingly.
