Chayah Cat is finally spayed! Thanks to all who helped!

No more unplanned kittens!

Chayah, the stray cat we took in back in January, is finally spayed.  (6 of her kittens are adopted out, we are keeping #7, named Bugsy.)  I took her to the vet yesterday and will pick her up today around noon.  Here she is in her cat carrier, waiting to go in the car yesterday -- and not very happy about it.  Poor kitty, I hope she doesn't think I'm abandoning her.  She was abandoned before and has separation issues.  I'll give her a big hug when I get her back today.

July 26 UPDATE:  she's home now and doing fine.   Was sure glad to see me, too!

So now all 14 of the adult cats on our place are spay/neutered.  The only one left is the kitten Bugsy who is not old enough yet.  Thanks to all who helped in so many ways!

I reached my goal -- spay/neuter everybody --  but I am still a couple hundred dollars in the hole with the vet bills.  So, I'm continuing to sell digital photos and souvenir feathers to pay the rest off.

Buy a photo get good karma  -- and a VERY FAST feedback, too!

New look is nice but needs tweaking, Rooster says

OK, so I come to my blog and there's a pic of me on the sidebar now.  But it's DISTORTED !!!!  Makes me and my cat look FAT!!! ARGGGGGHHH!!!!!!!   The same pic on my World page (where this pic came from) is not distorted.  Can't ebay use the same resizing/format program for pics on blogs as for World pages?????  Or is that too complicated for the "rocket scientists" around here???  Think I'll use my rooster head logo instead....

Then you go to the blogs homepage and discover that new bloggers aren't there by name and feedback scores anymore -- just pics.  Most of which are those generic ebay blank silhouettes.  So you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about these new bloggers unless you actually click on their pic.  A step backward, if you ask me.  I don't like shooting in the dark -- I used to go to new blogs whose name suggested things I might be interested in.  I also found it useful to know if a new blog belonged to a genuine newbie, some idiot with minus FB, or a veteran ebayer with positive FB.

There are also no line between posts on my own blog anymore -- they just run into each other (unless I add them myself in the HMTL which I did here.... guess i'll need to find a way to add my own divider line...)

And my row of chicks at the bottom of the page is GONE!!!!!   Lost my custom formatting!  It flipped me over to "slate" theme and didn't even ASK  me GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Now that I've ranted, I do like the idea of pics on the comments, to make it easier to keep track.   And I like the link to my own blog on the homepage and next to my ID in Comments, so I don't have to keep going back to my browser bookmarks.  Plus, I like the fact that FINALLY the posts in the list on the blogs homepage identify who is posting -- helps me avoid reading insults from known jerks...

But so far it's buggier than an entomologist's lab... What do you think???

WHAT are "META TAGS"? How do you use them?

What are Meta Tags – and why are they so important?

Meta Tags are a sort of shorthand that search engines use to pull up the title and description of a page quickly. These tags are not visible on screen to web surfers. Rather, they are hidden codes embedded in the HTML that the computers read. Search engines are programmed to check for these tags first and, if they are present, to use them to display the description of your page in the search results.

If a Web page has no meta tags, then the search engine displays the first couple lines of text on the page. That’s OK for eBay blogs, but not for your store. When your store pops up in a Google search, you want the title and description to reflect what you are actually selling, not whatever happens to be the first sentence on the page.

Fortunately, you don’t have to write your own meta tag codes, because eBay automatically generates them. In fact, I haven’t found any way to directly edit them on eBay pages. However, you can greatly influence their content, which is what you have been doing all along, even if you were unaware of it. Now we shall learn how to fine-tune the process.

Here is the meta code for my storefront on May 18, 2007 (the color coding has been added to make the explanation easier to follow):

</FONT></FONT><FONT size=4><FONT face="Courier New" color=#0000ff>eBay Store - The Happy Rooster: anti-war and peace, cruelty-free feathers, digital stock photos</FONT><FONT face="Courier New"><FONT color=#ad001f>

content="Buy anti-war and peace and cruelty-free feathers items from The Happy Rooster eBay Store. We also sell digital stock photos, Milkweed and Columbine seeds items on eBay.">

content="the happy rooster, anti-war and peace, cruelty-free feathers, digital stock photos, milkweed and columbine seeds, Jewish nonviolence, ebay selling tips ebook">

The red coding is the standard HTML code. The blue text was generated from my store description, and is the title of the page itself on the Internet. The green text also comes from my store description, and displays as the description of the page. The purple text is generated from my custom store categories and keywords and is used to flag the page in searches.

These Meta tags are not word-for-word what I actually wrote in my store description. Rather, the robot chooses the words that seem most relevant and/or appear most often. This clearly demonstrates how important it is to have a good description, accurate category titles, and relevant keywords. If you use your store description to discuss your family history or your personal philosophy, then that’s what’s going to appear in your meta tags. Unless you are actually marketing your philosophy, you are wasting a good promotional tool. (You can, however, create a custom page for your philosophy or bio.)

How do you change your Meta tag content? First, let’s look at your meta tags to see what is there already. Start with your storefront. Go to the "Search Engine Keywords" page again, click "edit" for your storefront, then click on "preview" down at the bottom. You will see your meta content, minus all the HTML coding (which makes it much easier for non-geeks to read.) If yours is irrelevant to what you are selling, then re-do your store description and change your custom keywords.

Note that the first few keywords will display first. The number of letter spaces is limited by eBay, so, if there is no room for all your keywords, the bottom ones will drop off. To be sure an important keyword is included here, re-arrange the order so that the word or phrase is closer to the top of the list. (You will need to do this by manually typing them in – there is no auto-sort option.)

It can take up to a month or more for the meta tags to be updated on the search engines. This is because each search engine has a program called a "spider" that "crawls" on the Web, reads your page, then stores it in a database for quick access later. The spiders are constantly crawling the Web in search of new content, but, because the Internet is so vast, they don’t get to your page every day. Therefore, if you are planning a special sale for an event such a Mother’s Day or the 4th of July, make sure you get those keywords changed well in advance.

Don't waste your store description on non-sales trivia!!!

When people ask me about improving their store, the first thing I look at is their store description -- if they even have one.  Others waste the space with things like "Add me to your favorites list" or their personal bio.  This is wasting a BIG selling tool -- and here's why:

(begin excerpt)

Your Store description is very important!!!

The description you write in this space is a major promotion tool for your store. Not only does it appear on your storefront as one of the first things people see, it’s also searchable by eBay, Google, and many other search engines. Plus, it appears with your store name when people do searches on the Stores homepage. Therefore, you want the content to contain as many keywords as possible that describe your line of merchandise. My store description currently reads:

"We sell cruelty-free chicken and goose feathers from our hobby farm in Pine County, Minnesota, plus milkweed, columbine, and other wildflower seeds, anti-war and peace items, and reincarnation consultations with Rabbi Yonassan Gershom, author of "Beyond the Ashes" and owner of The Happy Rooster."

This paragraph contains at least a dozen important keywords related to my business: cruelty-free, feathers, rooster, milkweed, seeds, columbine, wildflower, farm, Minnesota, anti-war, peace, reincarnation, plus my best-known book title and my name. (Google it sometime – I’m famous!) These keywords help pinpoint my specialties and identify me to the search engines.

You should do the same in your description. Store owners who leave this space blank, or use it for non-keyword-oriented content (such as their personal biographies), are missing out on an important promotional tool.

In the spring of 2007, when I added "Milkweed" and "Columbine seeds" to my description, my sales of those items increased within days – probably because the search engines were flagging my store description at a time when gardeners were looking for these species. Because seeds are seasonal, when the gardening season is over, I’ll change the description to focus on other types of items. You should do the same. As your inventory changes, so should your store description. Keep it up-to-date for better sales.

It was a great 4th of July -- and I have a new friend! (Rooster says)

Good evening!!
(or morning, depending where you are on the planet...)

Monday  I got rained out of my usual flea market, and I had plants to sell, so I decided to go to the flea market at the 4th of July celebration.  There are several small towns in the area who combine for one parade, festival, and fireworks.   What was to lose?  Flea market tables were free.

In addition to plants I took along a lot of other stuff, including those Mardi Gras peace beads  I had listed in my store, and a lot of peace/anti-war  buttons.  I wasn't sure how they would sell on the 4th, but they not only sold, I sold out!    I made about $150 yesterday -- pretty good for a last-minute sale.    Then I came home, logged in, and discovered I'd sold 11 digital photo downloads plus some seeds.  Not a bad day at all!

My table was next to a family selling exotic breeds of chickens.  (In farm country this is legal.)   How could I sit there ALL DAY next to those lovely birds and not buy one?  So I got this beautiful silver-blue Silkie chick.  S/he (don't know the sex yet) is not dyed -- that's the natural color.  I named the chick  "Freebird" because I got him/her on the 4th of July.

This chick is about the same age as Frieda's chicks, and both are Silkies, so I was hoping Frieda would accept Freebird into her family -- but no go.   So right now Freebird is in a cage next to their pen in the hope they will get to know each other through the wire and make friends.  (I've often used this method to introduce a new chicken into a flock.  I know it's ironic for a chicken named Freebird to end up in a cage, but hopefully it is only temporary -- and it's for the chick's own protection.  I don't need to worry about artificial heat - -the chick is old enough to keep warm OK, especially with heat wave we are having.)

All of Chayah's kittens have homes!

Today we adopted out the last one -- a grey male I had named Abie and thought I was going to have keep, but somebody called today looking for a grey male tabby, so he found a new home after all.  The little tortoise-shell female who was spoken for earlier this week was finally picked up by her new family last night.  (They named her Dana.)  So all the kittens are gone except for little Bugsy, whom we are going to keep.

Chayah is scheduled to be spayed on July 25 -- the vet felt she needs to put on some weight first, she's pretty thin after nursing 7 kitties.  (She still lets Bugsy nurse sometimes, but he's only one now.)   She adapted to them being gone OK -- probably because they went one at a time over a couple weeks, rather than all at once.  It's me who has empty nest syndrome!
