Captain Gershom welcomes you aboard!

Look what Rooster just found on his doorstep!

Another poor, hungry stray cat,

begging us for help.

Look how thin she is!  And boy, was she cold, hungry and thirsty!  Once the lakes freeze over here, it's hard for animals to find water.

I just found her half an hour ago, out on the back porch crying so pitifully.  I thought at first my kitten Tina had gotten out because she is a tri-colored tortoise-shell color like that, but when I looked closer, the markings were different and this cat is much bigger.

The strange thing is, she seems to know my other cats and dogs. The dogs did not bark at her and she actually rubbed against them.  She's not afraid of the dogs at all!  My three kittens hissed because they have never been outside to meet her, but the other cats don't seem to mind her being in the house.

My guess is, she's been living off the land around here for a while, and knows my animals.  But now that there's snow on the ground, there are fewer accessible rodents to catch and she's going hungry.

She's welcome to stay if we don't find an owner -- There really aren't many animal shelters around here.  And who would adopt such a skinny stray?  I only hope she is not pregnant!

UPDATE January 28, 2007:  My wife named her Chayah (pronounced KHAI-uh) which means "living one" in Hebrew.  (It doesn't translate so well -- it's a common Jewish woman's name.)  Since she was so starved and cold, we gave her a new name affirming LIFE for healing.  (Also an old Jewish tradition.)  Yes, we will look for an owner, but meanwhile we have to call her something besides "that cat..."

Chayah, it turns out, was in heat when we found her.  ARGHH!!!!  I do not need more kittens here!   It's early for that normally but the weather was so warm, it must have fooled her body into thinking it was spring.    Luckily we got Patches neutered in Dec, and little Tippy is too young to breed.  All our other males are also neutered.  She seems to be out of it now. and hopefully she did not find a fertile tomcat before she found us.  Oh well, time will tell...

Chayah Cat culed up asleepUPDATE:  Chayah, the starving stray kitty I took in last week, is doing fine! It's amazing what some good food and shelter will do. Here she is, making herself at home in the living room and, as you can see, she is already putting on some weight.   She's getting along fine with the rest of my animals, too -- and shows absolutely NO interest in going outside. This cat knows she has found a nice WARM loving home and she's going to stay put!

No sign of an owner.  We'll keep looking, but it looks like she will be staying permanently.  If so, she gets spayed -- so I guess it's time to sell more of those souvenir feathers to raise the money for that.  (You can buy them under "Help Animals" in my store.   Get a quick positive feedback, too!)

Wow! I would love to have more cats myself.14 might be a bit much right now. Most of my cats over the years have been strays or gifts from moving friends. Only have two cats right now, as I live in a small place. A friend of mine(by way of Ebay) from Israel has a shelter for strays with several hundred cats in her care. She cares for them for life. Rooster, it is a good thing I don't live near you and your family, cause I would be talking you into opening an Animal Rescue center with me! I just came back from having words with a neighbor over his chained up dog, with no food or water, this week, when we had all the ice and snow, that poor dog was on that chain and cold. I took a blanket and food and water over there! Today we had some serious words!

You are Gods gift Rabbi! Thank you so much!

Rooster, I just found this post prowling your "Me" page. Hope Chayah is doing well. We were in a similar situation in Arizona when construction in the area apparently drove all the stray cats to our large, "bushy" back yard. We struggled to care for the growing colony, making regular trips to the nearby spay/neuter clinic as our retirement budget would allow. It broke our hearts to leave the ones we did when we moved; we could get NO HELP from the so-called "shelters" or animal help groups. I [this is okie's wife here] was just almost hysterical as moving day neared and we still had cats we could not place. I drove in a rented van across four states with nine, and Bob brought one on the plane with him after he got the moving van on its way. The oldest, our neighbor's cat whom they left when they moved a few years ago, sadly, died last fall (she was about 17), and our "Chayah" turned up this winter. Long story, but she became Pitty-Pat, and she was doing so well. We hadn't gotten her to the vet yet to be vaccinated, and when our Bear returned from a week at the hospital for a urinary infection, he apparently brought something home with him, and Pitty-Pat became very ill. We've had her to the vet's twice and she seemed to be recovering when, three nights ago, she got into a tangle with something. We heard the pitiful cry about 4:00 a.m., jumped up to see what and where, turned on lights, looked everywhere, but found nothing except some of our other cats, also curious and concerned. Then, mid-morning, Pitty appeared, and when I petted her, her neck was "wet." I found a puncture wound in the top of her neck. I doctored her, and took her upstairs. The next day, she was obviously hurting; didn't want to be petted. Now she seems to have disappeared. I've looked everywhere and called and called. I'm so sad about this. So, keep us in your thoughts. I've should have taken her straight to the vet, but after Bear's long visit and Pitty's two previous visits, we're just "vet poo
