New colors of DEPS BASIRISKY towater frog added to the store

The Basirisky is still relatively new in the USA. These are some new colors I have just added to the store for the first time.

Deps Basirisky 60 ~ 1/2 oz Topwater Frog ~ Angola Python

Deps Basirisky 70 ~ 3/4 oz Topwater Frog ~ Angola Python

Deps Basirisky 60 ~ 1/2 oz Topwater Frog ~ Bullfrog

There are other hollow rubber frogs on the market, especially for fishing on top of thick grass mats, but none of them are like the Basirisky. In a watery world of look-alike soft hollow rubber frogs, the Basirisky is a refreshingly individual amphibian. A key difference is the action the Basirisky produces. Many other frog baits require skilled rod action to make them move in an enticing lifelike manner. On the other hand, the Basirisky will crawl across the surface in an active paddling type motion just by reeling in line slowly. No rod action is required. It's two curved legs look like flukes on a pirate ship anchor  - and they cause the Basirisky to crawl across the surface in a manner remindful of a Heddon Krazy Krawler or an Arbogast Jitterbug. All the action is built in to the Basirisky. Just reel slowly, and the Basirisky provides all the action.

Even at night, simply reeling the Basirisky slowly in weed-choked areas creates a gurgling trail that bass can follow. Other frogs can't easily do that, and are far less effective at night.

The Basirisky has a molded-in belly weight that gives it great stability and hooksetting posture.

There are two sizes:

  1. The Basirisky 70 is 3" long (73 millimeters) and weighs 3/4 ounce (20 grams). You could say this is the "standard" size frog for fishing heavy cover and thick grass.

  2. The Basirisky 60 is 2-1/2" long (63 millimeters) and weighs 1/2 ounce (13 grams). This size is the smaller Basirisky that many anglers favor for clear water, open weedless water, and calm water.

This is a new style of grass frog bait, imported from Japan, and the difference in action has not been seen by bass in the USA before. Want to fish the thick slop where the monster bass lurk? Better get a Basirisky.

New LARGER SIZE SHAKEY JIGS added to the store

NEW LARGER SIZE OF SHAKEY JIGS

In 2006, we have watched the top BASS and FLW pros in the process of learning to go deeper and heavier to tap into the last remaining unpressured bass residing deep on offshore ledges, humps and sunken rockpiles. With the increasing popularity of bass fishing and local tournament fishing, these deep offshore bass are the last unfished bastions of bass, and heavier jigs like these are the ticket to catch them.

This is a new larger, heavier size of Bassdozer's 1/2 oz (6/0) of shakey jig. I already offer these in 3/16 oz (4/0), 1/4 oz (5/0) and 3/8 oz (5/0) sizes. Now, this is the big new 1/2 oz size.

This new 1/2 oz (6/0) size handles bigger, beefier, longer worms (7" to 10" worms) that appeal to better-than-average size bass that tend to not be interested in smaller finesse worms. You've seen the top BASS and FLW pros on TV using these bigger, beefier, longer type worms for kicker bass during the post-spawn this spring. It's almost an in-water cull tactic to appeal to these bigger bass that are spawned out. They're not making the effort to whack every little minnow that saunters by, but they will do what it takes to get a bigger meal.

Not just post-spawn either, but all year, the truth is big worms and big shakey jigs like this new size tend to attract big fish. On the other hand, finesse worms and finesse-sized shakey jigs tend to attract finesse-sized fish.

New ~WAKEBAITS~ added to the store

7" AC Minnow ~ Wakebait ~ Bluegill

This breathtaking bluegill color has only been available in Japan until now. These are from the first limited shipment of this color imported into the USA. As good as it looks on the computer, this color looks even better in the water.

The "AC" stands for "Allen Cole." Cole's often credited with being the first to make a swimbait - the AC Plug - which also operates as a surface-roiling wakebait when cast and retrieved slowly.

Allan Cole is said to have discovered in the late 1980s that giant stripers and trophy largemouth targeted hatchery-raised, stocked trout as a food source. Armed with that knowledge, Cole set about to match the hues and coloration and deadly snake-like swimming movements of small trout with his huge wooden prototype AC Plugs. For four years, Cole secretly perfected his idea on the monster striped bass in California and Nevada. By the early 1990s, Cole was ready to unleash his AC Plugs on California's trophy largemouth bass, catching a 15 pound largemouth on his first trip. It sounds incredible, but most Californians at that time believed that big bass (over 10 pounds) could only be caught with live bait. On that history-making trip, Cole single-handedly began the big swimbait craze in California, and although it wasn't until years later that the term wakebait was coined - that's what AC plugs are - wakebaits.

The AC plugs you see here are manufactured in Japan for Optimum Baits (the California distributor) with Allen Cole's agreement.

Optimum Baits also imports the Deps Buzzjet wakebaits from Japan, which I sell in the store too.

I also sell a new American-made wakebait, whicxh is the latest (dare I say greatest) wakebait to hit the market only a couple months ago.... it's Tattoo Tackle's Surface Swimmer.

7" AC Mag Shad ~ Wakebait ~ Fire Tiger

This is the first time I've added this model in this color to the store. The Fire Tiger color is a hot seller in Europe.

There are two 7" sizes of AC wakebaits being manufactured in Japan nowadays. You see both listed above - the 7" AC Minnow and the 7" AC Mag Shad.

These 7" AC's are currently one of the best kept secrets in Western bass fishing. What these wakebaits have an ability to do, in waters where most other lures tend to attract primarily 1 and 2 pounders... the 7" AC's are used to wake up 3 and 4 pounders. It's considered an "in water cull bait," and it does exactly that. Not many guys have been clued in to this yet, and even seasoned veteran anglers when they first hear about this, they really do not believe it. You'd think it is way too big a bait - that's why most guys will never try it. But it is not too big. Even two pounders explode on it, ferociously! And the way they attack, you'd think they were four pounders.

5" AC Minnow ~ Wakebait ~ Largemouth

This is the first time I've added the largemouth color in the 5" AC Minnow wakebait.

Most anglers are unnerved by the size of the 7" AC wakebaits. The 5" size here is more acceptable - although still bigger than most other lures that most anglers throw.

For an angler who feels the 7" AC's are too much wakebait, this is the absolutely perfect size wakebait especially for trophy smallmouth and spotted bass, which do not get as large (or greedy) as their largemouth cousins.

Also, I have the Deps Buzzjet and Buzzjet Jr wakebaits in the store.

Deps Buzzjet ~ Wakebait ~ Largemouth

Deps Buzzjet Jr. ~ Wakebait ~ Mossback Shiner

As mentioned above, I have the brand new American-made Tattoo Tackle's Surface Swimmers in the store too. Currently, I am the only one who has any of these:

Tattoo's Surface Swimmer

Sneak Peak at New Prototypes ~ Work in Progress

I took photos of these prototypes in order to share the photos with a friend. Then I thought you may enjoy seeing them too. These are not glamour shots. They're kind of a peek under the hood. So please don't mind if they look a little messy. These are working prototypes of lures that I've been evolving lately. I have a number of other items I am working on too and new skirt colors coming... but these were the pieces which were handy on the boat when I just went out there. Please enjoy!

ITEM #1 ~ SWIMMING SHAKEY JIG

I currently offer a flat football shakey jig (see item #3). These flat football shakey jigs excel for shaking while standing on bottom, targeting fish in 10 to 30 feet of water. Furthermore, the wide, flat face promotes wiggle on the drop, when reeling in, when twitched or jerked and when raised-and-lowered on bottom like a yoyo, the flat face makes the worm wiggle and squirm more than many other shakey jigs on the market. Most shakey jigs out there tend to be round ball shapes, and my new prototype is too - but for dramatically different reasons than all the other round heads.

The new prototype round SWIMMING SHAKEY JIG is more for swimming and coming through shallow grass and brush.

Although a ball shape, it is carefully hung on the hook so to be about as weedless as a ball jig can be. You can't tell from the photo, but the ball mass is well-positioned so it comes through grass and brush. It is currently being revised to have the upper rear quadrant sliced/cut out right where the head of the worm would be positioned on the wire screw. Think of a PacMan mouth cut out of the ball right there to make it more roomy for the worm head - and importantly, to make the other remaining three quadrants more stable (like a kids stand-up Popeye or clown punching bag that won't fall down and pops back up). So although this will be suspended off the bottom, held up by the fishing line while swimming, it will have a lower "rolly-polly" forward center of gravity as opposed to a sloppier spherical balance.

This has the same 5/0 hook as my existing "Wisconsin style" ("Style R") swimming jigs, and that hook makes all the difference when swimming. It was recently and especially designed by Mustad for swimming applications. Most other round ball jigs do NOT have a swimming jig hook. I'm currently aiming for 2 sizes - 1/8 oz (5/0) and 5/32 oz (5/0) of the Swimming Shakey Worm Jig. It works great with the new Yamamoto Swimming Senko, and with Yamamoto's soon-to-be-released Shad Shape Worm. It excels to swim and shake all straight- or curly-tail worms and twister-tail grubs.

TEM #3 ~ NEW LARGER SIZE OF FLAT FOOTBALL SHAKEY JIG

New larger size, 1/2 oz (6/0) of flat football shakey jig. I already offer these in 3/16 oz (4/0), 1/4 oz (5/0) and 3/8 oz (5/0) sizes.

This new 1/2 oz (6/0) size handles bigger, beefier, longer worms (7" to 10" worms) that appeal to better-than-average size bass that tend to not be interested in smaller finesse worms. You've seen the top BASS and FLW pros on TV using these bigger, beefier, longer type worms for kicker bass during the pre-spawn this spring. It's almost an in-water cull tactic to appeal to these bigger bass that are spawned out. They're not making the effort to whack every little minnow that saunters by, but they will do what ti takes to get a bigger meal.

Not just post-spawn either, but all year... finesse worms and finesse-sized shakey jigs tend to attract finesse-sized fish. Big worms and big shakey jigs like this new size tend to attract big fish.

I already have gotten delivery of these. I just have not got them on eBay yet. I have: brown pepper, green pumpkin pepper, green pumpkin red flake and plain black. All painted with your choice of black nickel or red hooks. These will be put up on eBay later this week. So watch the store and... go for it, dude~!

ITEM #5 ~ PROTOTYPE BUZZBAIT

I hope not, but honestly it could be next spring before I am able to get these finished and put into production to sell. Until then, let me say this: "A better or more enjoyable buzzbait I've not used!"

This incredible new 1/2 oz buzzbait impresses me in every way! Casts forever... You can fire out a cast and wolf down half a ham sandwich before this buzzbait hits the water! Instantly planes to the surface. No special moves required! No weird rod angles or whatever to keep it on top. Plows like a rented mule! Extremely stable. Little or no torque. I'll say it again: "A better or more enjoyable buzzbait I've not used!"

ITEM #6 ~ STYLE R FLIPPING JIG

Again, it could be a while before I have these to sell, but this is a new 1/2 oz Style R flipping jig that is finished, just needs a production mold cut. I already have one model of 1/2 oz flip jig for sale (see item #8). This existing item #8 is a "Style T" flip jig. The new prototype yopu see here (item #6) is a 1/2 oz "Style R" flip jig which comes through soft and gloppy grass even better (better = more smoothly) than the one currently available (Style T). The new Style R has a lot of lift to it. It kind of skims over grass rather than grab in it. I'm not saying grabbing grass is bad. I love the way the existing Style T flip jig (item #8) grabs grass and brush but let's go. There's something fish find perfect about that at times. I like to envision the Style T's clutching action as more what an aquatic insect would do - grab onto stuff and then shoot off. The new 1/2 oz Style R is more smooth, more "swim through" effect - and better for soft gloppy grass. I recently approved the final Style R design for production mold-mastering - but it may still take many months to get this new Style R flip jig to sell. There will be a second size of this - a 3/8 oz Style R flip jig - but that size is nowhere near ready. It needs to be chubbed up a little bit on the cheeks, and that's not a quick revision.

ITEMS #7 & #9 ~ SPIN CHIN JIG

I haven't fooled with these enopugh to be quite sure yet, but think the wire under the chin may make it hard for a fish to take this into its mouth? I reckon that's a factor on all spinnerbaits or other wire baits. Anyway, I have been experimenting just a bit with these in 1/4 and 3/8 oz sizes. They get a lot of bites and a lot of attention. There have been a couple days when I got buckets of hits on these (more than other lures) but fish just do not seem to stay pinned on them yet like I would want. A lot of fish come unbuttoned. I got a lot of action on these with the relatively new Yamamoto 3-1/2" Swimbait and the brand new Swimming Senko... but I think fish can get prying leverage on the short wire. I even nipped the 5" Swimming Senko shorter by an inch or 2, which got plenty of bites, but the bite-to-landing ratio was not good enough for me. I am currently looking into collapsible titanium wire... If I get this to keep all the fish that bite it to stay pinned properly, it's going to be a winner. In the meantime, further research is required! :)

ITEM #8 ~ EXISTING STYLE R FLIP JIG

I just included this item #8 in the photo to show the current 1/2 oz Style T flipping jig for size comparison purposes.

This photo shows the underside of Items #5 and #6 is all. They both generate an awful lot of lift.

ITEMS #10 & #11 ~ NEW LARGER SIZE OF ARKEY JIG

New larger size, 3/4 oz (5/0) of Arkey Jig.  I already offer these in 1/4 oz (3/0), 3/8 oz (4/0) and 1/2 oz (5/0) sizes. I call these "Power Jigs" in the store but they are Arkey jigs.

Bigger, heavier jigs like this new 3/4 oz (5/0) size have a presence in the water that appeals to better-than-average size bass. Bigger bass can detect more bulk, more bump, more mass... and that's really what they want. They tend to not be as interested in lighter or smaller jigs. You will tend to appeal to a better grade of bass on this 3/4 oz size jig... even in only inches of water. Bigger bass may not make the effort to whack every little minnow that saunters by, but they will do what it takes when they detect the presence and mass of this bigger (bigger = heavier) jig.

I already have gotten delivery of these. I just have not got them on eBay yet. I have: brown pepper, green pumpkin pepper, and plain black. All painted finish with black nickel hooks. These will be put up on eBay later this week. So watch the store for them. They'll be in the store dressed with skirts (some with rattles) - or you can buy them undressed - just the bare 3/4 oz Arkey heads sold separately. Look for them later this week!

All three of the jigs in this photo (items #10, #11 & #12) are dressed with three different styles of sparse skirts in order to show more of the trailer - the new Yamamoto Flappin' Hog. I do not prefer a "full size" skirt when using the Flappin' Hog as a jig trailer. The skirts shown are all about "half full" skirts. Rather than obscuring them under a full skirt,  the half skirt styles help present more of the Flappin' Hog shape, features and actions to fish. It's not hard to do. Just cut half the skirt off - either cut off the forward-facing half of the skirt (item #10) or cut off the backward-facing half of the skirt (item #11) or use the hubbed skirts I sell which have 70 backward-facing strands and present a sparse peek-a-boo skirt appearance right out of the bag without your needing to trim them (item #12).

ITEMS #14 & #15 ~ SPIN CHIN JIG

These are the same prototype items already shown and described in the section on items #7 and #9 above. These prototypes are the same as my existing Stand Up Jigs (items #13 and #16) except the prototypes have wires, ball bearing swivels and blades under the chin. My Stand Up Jigs are already in the store in 1/4 oz, 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz sizes. The prototypes with the spinners still need more work (see explanation given for items #7 and #9 above).

In this photo, the soft bait dressings shown are:

  • Items #13 & #14 ~ Yamamoto's 3-1/2" swimbait (this is a killer soft bait)

  • Item #15 ~ the new Swimming Senko

  • Item #16 ~ Yamamoto's not-yet-released 5" swimbait is destined for greatness. It's not necessarily a huge bait for largemouth in shallow, dirty water - but I expect it to produce outlandishly-big spotted and smallmouth bass in clear to modestly-stained environments. This is a kicker catcher!

Thank you for looking! I hope you enjoyed seeing these prototype items. I have a number of other prototype designs that are currently works in progress, and if you like seeing this kind of stuff, then perhaps I can share some of those others with you one day soon. In the interim, I am constantly adding new and better items to the store all the time. So please stop by often! Thank you again.
