Archive - October 2006 New colors of DEPS BASIRISKY towater frog added to the storePosted Oct-21-06 15:49:25 PDT The Basirisky is still relatively new in the USA. These are some new colors I have just added to the store for the first time. ![]() Deps Basirisky 60 ~ 1/2 oz Topwater Frog ~ Angola Python
![]() Deps Basirisky 60 ~ 1/2 oz Topwater Frog ~ Bullfrog There are other hollow rubber frogs on the market, especially for fishing on top of thick grass mats, but none of them are like the Basirisky. In a watery world of look-alike soft hollow rubber frogs, the Basirisky is a refreshingly individual amphibian. A key difference is the action the Basirisky produces. Many other frog baits require skilled rod action to make them move in an enticing lifelike manner. On the other hand, the Basirisky will crawl across the surface in an active paddling type motion just by reeling in line slowly. No rod action is required. It's two curved legs look like flukes on a pirate ship anchor - and they cause the Basirisky to crawl across the surface in a manner remindful of a Heddon Krazy Krawler or an Arbogast Jitterbug. All the action is built in to the Basirisky. Just reel slowly, and the Basirisky provides all the action. Even at night, simply reeling the Basirisky slowly in weed-choked areas creates a gurgling trail that bass can follow. Other frogs can't easily do that, and are far less effective at night. The Basirisky has a molded-in belly weight that gives it great stability and hooksetting posture. There are two sizes:
This is a new style of grass frog bait, imported from Japan, and the difference in action has not been seen by bass in the USA before. Want to fish the thick slop where the monster bass lurk? Better get a Basirisky. New LARGER SIZE SHAKEY JIGS added to the storePosted Oct-21-06 15:45:49 PDT Updated Oct-31-06 08:29:12 PST NEW LARGER SIZE OF SHAKEY JIGS In 2006, we have watched the top BASS and FLW pros in the process of learning to go deeper and heavier to tap into the last remaining unpressured bass residing deep on offshore ledges, humps and sunken rockpiles. With the increasing popularity of bass fishing and local tournament fishing, these deep offshore bass are the last unfished bastions of bass, and heavier jigs like these are the ticket to catch them. This is a new larger, heavier size of Bassdozer's 1/2 oz (6/0) of shakey jig. I already offer these in 3/16 oz (4/0), 1/4 oz (5/0) and 3/8 oz (5/0) sizes. Now, this is the big new 1/2 oz size.
This new 1/2 oz (6/0) size handles bigger, beefier, longer worms (7" to 10" worms) that appeal to better-than-average size bass that tend to not be interested in smaller finesse worms. You've seen the top BASS and FLW pros on TV using these bigger, beefier, longer type worms for kicker bass during the post-spawn this spring. It's almost an in-water cull tactic to appeal to these bigger bass that are spawned out. They're not making the effort to whack every little minnow that saunters by, but they will do what it takes to get a bigger meal. Not just post-spawn either, but all year, the truth is big worms and big shakey jigs like this new size tend to attract big fish. On the other hand, finesse worms and finesse-sized shakey jigs tend to attract finesse-sized fish.
New ~WAKEBAITS~ added to the storePosted Oct-21-06 15:41:58 PDT Updated Oct-23-06 08:27:24 PDT
This breathtaking bluegill color has only been available in Japan until now. These are from the first limited shipment of this color imported into the USA. As good as it looks on the computer, this color looks even better in the water. The "AC" stands for "Allen Cole." Cole's often credited with being the first to make a swimbait - the AC Plug - which also operates as a surface-roiling wakebait when cast and retrieved slowly. Allan Cole is said to have discovered in the late 1980s that giant stripers and trophy largemouth targeted hatchery-raised, stocked trout as a food source. Armed with that knowledge, Cole set about to match the hues and coloration and deadly snake-like swimming movements of small trout with his huge wooden prototype AC Plugs. For four years, Cole secretly perfected his idea on the monster striped bass in California and Nevada. By the early 1990s, Cole was ready to unleash his AC Plugs on California's trophy largemouth bass, catching a 15 pound largemouth on his first trip. It sounds incredible, but most Californians at that time believed that big bass (over 10 pounds) could only be caught with live bait. On that history-making trip, Cole single-handedly began the big swimbait craze in California, and although it wasn't until years later that the term wakebait was coined - that's what AC plugs are - wakebaits. The AC plugs you see here are manufactured in Japan for Optimum Baits (the California distributor) with Allen Cole's agreement. Optimum Baits also imports the Deps Buzzjet wakebaits from Japan, which I sell in the store too. I also sell a new American-made wakebait, whicxh is the latest (dare I say greatest) wakebait to hit the market only a couple months ago.... it's Tattoo Tackle's Surface Swimmer. ![]() 7" AC Mag Shad ~ Wakebait ~ Fire Tiger This is the first time I've added this model in this color to the store. The Fire Tiger color is a hot seller in Europe. There are two 7" sizes of AC wakebaits being manufactured in Japan nowadays. You see both listed above - the 7" AC Minnow and the 7" AC Mag Shad. These 7" AC's are currently one of the best kept secrets in Western bass fishing. What these wakebaits have an ability to do, in waters where most other lures tend to attract primarily 1 and 2 pounders... the 7" AC's are used to wake up 3 and 4 pounders. It's considered an "in water cull bait," and it does exactly that. Not many guys have been clued in to this yet, and even seasoned veteran anglers when they first hear about this, they really do not believe it. You'd think it is way too big a bait - that's why most guys will never try it. But it is not too big. Even two pounders explode on it, ferociously! And the way they attack, you'd think they were four pounders. ![]() 5" AC Minnow ~ Wakebait ~ Largemouth This is the first time I've added the largemouth color in the 5" AC Minnow wakebait. Most anglers are unnerved by the size of the 7" AC wakebaits. The 5" size here is more acceptable - although still bigger than most other lures that most anglers throw. For an angler who feels the 7" AC's are too much wakebait, this is the absolutely perfect size wakebait especially for trophy smallmouth and spotted bass, which do not get as large (or greedy) as their largemouth cousins. Also, I have the Deps Buzzjet and Buzzjet Jr wakebaits in the store.
A brand new American-made wakebait ~ shown in Blue Herring (top), Ayu (center) and Chartreuse Shad (bottom). Sneak Peak at New Prototypes ~ Work in ProgressPosted Oct-21-06 15:34:14 PDT Updated Dec-05-07 09:14:36 PST I took photos of these prototypes in order to share the photos with a friend. Then I thought you may enjoy seeing them too. These are not glamour shots. They're kind of a peek under the hood. So please don't mind if they look a little messy. These are working prototypes of lures that I've been evolving lately. I have a number of other items I am working on too and new skirt colors coming... but these were the pieces which were handy on the boat when I just went out there. Please enjoy!
