I must have my Ocscar voice

It's been so long since I have posted and I am bursting with spring tidbits and how to pick up inexpensive touches to change wardrobes etc, BUT I CAN"T GO ON until I get the OSCARS off my chest!  I didn't even want to write about it, what a losing proposition from a fashion point of view this year.  Once again I teamed up with eBay Canada and their fabulous PR group Environics, as  Style Director  covering the Oscars .  We did loads of radio talk shows which were great because you get a normal person's feedback and that's the audience, I loved conversing and of course bemoaning the atrocities and even worse than that, the boredom with them.  They totally got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the Oscars tried to do to build the viewing audience again 

 It was an all time low, lowest since 1955 last year.  Big advertisers had pulled out, they were having to lower the ad spot $$$, a mess!  One of the ideas was to not let the viewers know who some of the presenters were until they appeared on stage to create excitement.  Dumb, dumb!  The celebs did not walk the red carpet because they were to be "secrets".  It robbed the red carpet show interest.  The designers always depend on dressing the stars to show their wares, it is truly the biggest runway show in America.  Nada this year, they didn't even know what celebrities or agents to call to present sketches or dresses  except the nominees who only represent a small part of the glamour.  Also a PR girl's nightmare, let me tell you!

Tell all trends

As people ask me for trend predictions, the trends were so un uinteresting and copy cat obvious all season, I felt  embarassed being refered to as an expert.

 Blue of course because Kate winslet, Angelina Jolie, Frieda Pinto, Sheryl Crowe, Audina Partride, Kathy Griffin and M.I.A. had all worn it to award shows leading to the Oscars.  Kate and Frieda wore it again on Oscar night among others.

Pastels, well hello, how beautiful did Kate Perry look in pink at the Grammys, Paula Abdul, even Rahahel Saadig in a yellow suit!  At the Oscars we had Sarah Jessica looking like Glenda the good "mint" green witch, gorgeous Penelope Cruze and my favorite Natalie Portman in pink Rodarte.

Mickey Rourke is this year's Diablo Cody

Mickey Rourke was this year's Diablo Cody, (Cher, Barbara Streissand or whatever.) He provided the fantasy, the vintage, the rockn roll in both young and old.  WE know the economy is in the pits, give us some genuine nutzy fantasy for one hour!  Bless you Mickey Rourke for the color , the laugh, the snippet of the real Oscars.  It took us back to those great moments when Jack Nicholson mooned the audience, when a streaker ran across the stage, when Babs Striessand wore a completley sheer sailor suit by Bob Mackey, when the little Italian director walked over chairs to get to the stage to accept his award for "Life is Beautiful"  Those were the Oscars!!!!!  That's what I want again not predictable blue dresses!

Pickup Oscar pieces

Pick up a few fun interesting styles from the Oscars to incorporate into your wardrobe.  For example Mickey always has one of his signature long silk scarves in paisley, wide orange stripe, black ,white...579 on eBay.  He wore a cool velvet jacket to the Golden Globes, 80 of those on eBay, over 1000 pair of retro sunglasses he's famous for and loads of black leather cord neck jewelry.  it's cheap and unisex!  Just please don't disappoint me and by a blue long dress :-)

Best and worst

In case you're still interested at this late dress my worst choice was Beyonce.  Her dress looked like upholstery fabric that should be a couch!

My best, although no one was drop dead, was Penelope Cruz in her vintage princess gown.  I love the story that goes with it.  She looked at it in a vintage store and loved it.  She did not buy it but went back 8 years later for the Oscars and there it was still waiting for her, kind of meant to be and then of course she won her Oscar.

TORONTO TELL ALL

 

I feel like it’s been so long since we’ve talked, it has!  What brings me back to you today is another film festival, even bigger than the Tribeca Film Festival and much more fun for me!  I was honored to represent eBay Canada as the eBay CA Celebrity Style Director at the Toronto International Film Festival, better known as TIFF J  Talk about heaven!!!  Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Ryan Gosling, Ed Norton, Josh Brolin.  Oh and a few big name women too, Keira Knightley, (fresh off her 4^th cover of VOGUE), Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Anniston, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys.

Why go on, I know what you want to know is what they were wearing!!

 

FIRST OFF FASHION SHOW

 

Having dressed a number of celebrities in my life, the Toronto crowd had a NEW challenge awaiting me!  “Make us look like them, on OUR budget all from eBay.”

WOW!  21 TV, radio, internet, and print interviews later, 5 exhausted models and one worn out PR firm named Environics, mission accomplished and we really could have taken this show on the road!!!!

You can’t believe it!!!  Let me try to describe some of it!

 

HATHAWAY HATH MARC JACOBS

 

If you look back on wireimage.com, you will see Anne Hathaway at the 2006 Golden Globes in a one shoulder Marc Jacobs navy tulle dress covered with silver sparkles.  She’s wearing silver sandals, diamond tassel earrings, and small diamond bracelets on her wrists.  I am going to do my best to get either a few links up for you or pictures BUT in our Toronto show we had a model wearing the same Marc Jacobs dress, I won’t speculate where it came from, a pair of Christian Louboutin silver strap heels, tassel earrings, and diamond bracelets!!!!  Dress and shoes on eBay $250.

 

I won’t go on and on with every look, but just have to tell about a few more bargains!  A black corseted dress similar to the one Charlize Theron wore to the 2006 Golden Globes at an unbelievable price, black suede Manolo Blahnik booties that we have all seen on Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller, and a two inch wide Sarah Coventry gold cuff for $5 that an editor almost swiped!  The piece de résistance was a red vintage Azzedine Alaia gown.  The seaming, the detail, it was breath taking.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  It was such a find and under $200!!

PREDICTIONS

 

Along with the fashion show, I threw a few predictions for fall and things I expected to see on the TIFF red carpet. Color; purple, red, sapphire blue, strapless; one shoulder; floral; of course Jennifer Anniston in black; statement necklaces;

 

So far we’ve seen Kate Hudson in strapless red, Thandie Newton in a large floral print, tons of sapphire blue including Jennifer Hudson and of course Jennifer Anniston in black!

WOW!  Thank you for all your responses to my posting today.  Miley is a hot topic! I LOVE hearing from you.Your advice is great and fun too! I agree with all of you. She should be more dressed and your handbag, sunglasses and one of those great tops would be perfect :-)!  I also agree that the whole story is pretty sad and disappointing.  I think I first became aware of it at the Oscars.  I remember seeing that 15 year old girl in a red Valentino gown, Valentino, thousands and thousands of dollars, a label Nicole Kidman wears.  She also had gold and ruby dangling earrings on with bright red lips. As I watched her vamping it up on the red carpet, at first I thought it was funny, then I realized what was wrong with the picture. She was dressed entirely to sophisticated and could be an accident waiting to happen.  I think we all hope this will be a wake up call to Miley and all of those who work with her.

How many more newspapers am I going to pick up today, how many more TV shows, how many more internet flashes about teenage good girl Miley Cyrus in her semi nude pictures to be in the next issue of  "Vanity Fair Magazine"?  Is this a real life issue?  Yes I suppose it is.  What do you think?  What does it have to do with jewelry?  I'll tell you what!  JEWELRY could have made these photos better, not so nude, not so naughty.  Picutre this, a sweet sterling silver guitar charm on a chain or a big jade guitar pick on a leather cord hanging down Miss Miley's back?  How about that messy Miley hair in a ponytail with some dangling gold and ruby guitar earrings?  We can never under estimate the power of jewelry!
