How many more newspapers am I going to pick up today, how many more TV shows, how many more internet flashes about teenage good girl Miley Cyrus in her semi nude pictures to be in the next issue of  "Vanity Fair Magazine"?  Is this a real life issue?  Yes I suppose it is.  What do you think?  What does it have to do with jewelry?  I'll tell you what!  JEWELRY could have made these photos better, not so nude, not so naughty.  Picutre this, a sweet sterling silver guitar charm on a chain or a big jade guitar pick on a leather cord hanging down Miss Miley's back?  How about that messy Miley hair in a ponytail with some dangling gold and ruby guitar earrings?  We can never under estimate the power of jewelry!

Hi there all you celeb watchers!  I know I am super late with my Oscar
post but I thought I could let you get your fill of all those clamoring
to be first filling your head with their choices of the good, the bad
and the ugly.  Now with a clear head and mind, you can absorb what I
have to say :-) Seriously, I know it sounds good and does make sense
but truthfully I have been in Toronto and so, so busy with the fabulous
eBay Canada.  They really rock when it comes to the celeb world.  It
was non stop from 5:00 A.M. the day I arrived until 5:00 P.M. the night
I left to return to New York.  WHEW!!!! But, what fun!

BACK TO HOLLYWOOD AND THE OSCARS
Hats of to Diablo Cody for the Cher moment!!!  She shook it up. She
gave us some fun.  The Academy Awards did not intimidate her; she
remained true to herself and her personal style.  On the other hand, as
adorable and successful as she is, Mile Cyrus in Valentino did not
seem to be a natural. I'm not saying Urban Outfitters to the Oscars but
perhaps Peter son, Mui Mui, Marc Jacobs or vintage would have been more
age appropriate.


AND THE WINNER IS
As you all know by now, not one American took home the gold in the top
4 actor categories, but the American designers were there in force;
Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, Marchesa, Calvin Klein, Oscar de la
Renta, Kevan Hall, Monique Llhullier and even Pamela Dennis!  The
Marchesa girls to me were the winners of the night in the best dress
categories. Anne Hathaway was gorgeous in a red rosette covered one
shoulder stunner. Jessica Alba was a vision, pregnant in purple with
feather trim across the top. I watched gown after gown come down the
red carpet with nothing but color or jewelry going for it.  The design
of the dress itself was just not special.  However, the Marchesa gowns
on Anne and Jessica stood on their own.  They were chic, tasteful and
definitely not boring.

MARION THE MERMAID
Marion Cottillard in Jean Paul Gaultier was beyond detailed.  I wonder
how many hours and how many fingers it took to complete that look! 
Some say it looked like Darryl Hannah in the movie "SPLASH" but I say
nothing could have looked bad on this beautiful beaming girl especially as she
triumphantly posed with her Oscar!  She wisely went subtle with the
jewelry.  I loved the gold in her long necklace.

OSCAR STRIKES GOLD

Gold has been an unstoppable trend for the last 3 seasons but finally it made its way to the biggest red carpet event in Hollywood.  Nothing can add a glow to the face like gold jewelry on the ears or at the neck.  Sorry Bobbi Brown and Estee Lauder!!!!  This is an age old celebrity trick.  Amy Adams, Jessica Alba, Miley Cyrus and    are just a few who picked up on this added perk.

RICH GETS RICHER

We saw yellow and pink diamonds last year which I think added a richness and interest to diamond jewelry.  This year we witnessed another dimension of richness. Deep gemstones such as rubies, and emeralds were combined with diamonds in earrings, bracelets and cocktail rings.  It had a truly regal look.  Cate Blanchett had some of the most interesting combinations of this new found richness.

DIAMONDS DE RIGOUR

Sparkling clear diamonds of course are always glamorous and present at the Oscars and they were this year although plentiful in most cases not in size!  Diamond necklaces have all but disappeared in recent years, so much in fact that the Diamond Information Center asked the beautiful Julianne Moore to host a party a few days before the Oscars in hopes of encouraging the wearing of necklaces.

KARAT TOP

Nicole Kidman topped the karat contest last year and I don’t mean her hair!!!!!  She did not disappoint this year.  Her L’Wren Scott designed necklace was a whopping 1400 Karats!!!!!!!!!  I know nothing about the dress she wore; only that it was black.  It was ALL about the bling!  There were a few show stopper pieces such as the ones worn by Nicole and Cate but otherwise most of the jewelry up and down the red carpet was understated and sparse.  I would have to agree with Finola Hughes,

CLUNK-CLUNK-CLUNK

I suppose it would not be a complete Oscar wrap without a few clunkers so here goes.

v      Beautiful, beautiful Julie Christie, there are other way to cover your arms; ditch the pink elbow length gloves.

v      Mrs. Daniel Day Lewis, were you trying to keep us from gawking at your hunk of a husband by wearing that dizzying dress?

v      Now Tilda dear, I thought your dress was tres’ chic but the general consensus was that you were wearing a “Hefty Bag”.

OK, OK, I know it’s better to give than to receive but I just haven’t been able to resist the “buy one for me too” policy while shopping for gifts this season!  The holiday jewelry trends this year are so exciting who could say no?  Not me.

Take for example the wonderful vintage Christmas brooches.  I found an auction for a lot of 23.  They ranged from a bright red bow to a terrier with a jeweled wreath around his neck.  I love wearing, eh I mean giving, three or four together.  They look fabulous scattered on a lapel, worn on a beret or even on a handbbag: so versatile!

Gold jewelry of any kind whether matte or shiny is always a welcomed gift.  Gold adds a glow like no other metal to the skin.  You always see the celebrities wearing gold.  When you’re shopping for gold be sure to buy by the ounce, not the carat.  At least be aware of the difference.  14-karat solid and 14-karat hollow gold should not be the same price.  If you know anyone that does not have a wide gold cuff yet, it is a must have item!!!!

• Put a wide patent belt around the waist; add big gold hoops and a vivid colored gemstone ring set in gold.  
  

• Shorten the dress to a mini, wear patterned tights with boots, and add a large gold medallion.  Hello “60’s”

• Toss a beautiful beaded cardigan over your shoulders and add that must have wide cuff to your wrist.

• Go ahead and shorten the dress but don’t wear as a mini, wear it as an elegant tunic over slim black pants.  Add strands of long pearls and even a few strands of black jet or crystal beads.  I want it just thinking about it!
