2 Pit Bulls almost kill my dog. It's heartbreaking!Posted Jan-21-08 19:43:59 PST
Last Monday afternoon my dog, Jade, and I were enjoying a nice, long walk as we've been doing almost every day for years. As we were about to cross the street, I stopped to check for traffic. Honestly, I wasn't that concerned when I noticed 2 dogs in the front yard of a house up the street. My unconcern didn't last long when I realized they were both unrestrained Pit Bulls. The 2 dogs started coming towards us immediately. I tightened Jade's leash to keep her close to me. I commanded the dogs to, "Go home!" They both strutted with determination towards my dog. Both Pit Bulls jumped on my dog while I was still holding the leash. My 'babygirl' was trying to protect me. There was no time to waste, I had to get help and get it in a hurry. I ran up the street screaming my head off. Fortunately, a man was outside in the yard five or six houses up the road. I yelled to him that 2 Pit Bulls were killing my dog. Without a moment's hesitation, he pulled out his cell phone and called 911. While giving the 911 operator the details and location, he instructed me to get into his pickup truck. Within a few minutes, I felt as though I had a front row seat at a horror movie. This was no fictional movie...it was FOR REAL! The two dogs had Jade down on her back in the street. THEY WERE EATING HER ALIVE! Several cars stopped and were blowing their horns in hopes that the attack would stop. One brave man got out of his SUV and tried kicking the dogs. While that man was trying to retrieve a golf club from the back of his SUV, the nice man who had helped me told him to get back in his car as the dogs might turn on him. Luckily, the police were close by when the call came in. The officer got really close to the fighters and sprayed them with pepper spray. It did not phase them at all. Within a few seconds, he pulled out his gun, carefully aimed and shot the bigger pit bull. When that one fell to the ground, the other pit bull let go and moved away from my dog. Amazingly, my medium-sized dog stood up and hobbled across the street to my open arms before collasping to the ground. She was covered in blood. While I was down on the ground trying to console her, the pit bull that was shot stood up and walked across the street towards us. Terrified, I picked Jade up in my arms and got into the back of the nice man's pickup. This is the second time within 3 years that I've had to take a beloved pet to the vet due to a Pit Bull attack. In addition, my favorite cat was killed by 2 pit bulls left to run loose by their owner. Sadly, two small children have been killed by pit bulls in Savannah since 1999. I have not heard a word from the dogs' owner. It's upsetting to learn that he will be allowed to keep his 2 attack dogs. Why! Because their shots were up-to-date and it was the dogs' first reported 'BITE' attack. According to an SCPAC clerk, the owner keeps them in a fenced backyard with a pad lock. Unfortunately for my dog, he forgot to pad lock the gate that day. Oops! There's a day care center a few houses up the street from the owner's house. What if the next attack is on a child...not a dog. The laws need to change. If a dog (any breed of dog) viciously attacks for no reason, in my opinion, that dog is agressive, dangerous & unpredictable. It should be humanely put down. Also, I encourage everyone to report ALL dog bites. Documented bites could help to protect others from going through a horrible, traumatic experience. Seriously, it could help to save someone's life. My little sweetheart is still fighting for her life. I didn't think that I had any more tears to cry. Today when the vet told me that Jade's leg will probably be amputated tomorrow, I cried uncontrollably. When will this nightmare end?
