Repair of Electronics For Sales

As is = "Broken"?

One of the problems I have seen is that folks don't realize that if something you sell does not work as it should, it ruins your profile and makes it less likely that future sales will go well. I have repaired a lot of equipment for people selling on ebay, and I speak from experience when I say that the extra money spent on making sure a device works is well worth it. I have had only 1 bad experience with this myself and lost $360.00 for my troubles, but I have myself to blame for this because, I was new to ebay and did not understand certain dynamics. Now I only deal with certain individuals and I can say that my experiences now are better. This "as is" tail I often see, to me signals a red flag, or at least a caution to the buyer. I would suggest to any new ebay buyer that if you see "as is" remember the device is being sold with a question mark and that means certian issues are not going to be disclosed, so if you feel "hinky" about the sale "opt out" stop bidding on the object, or better, don't "opt in" start bidding on the item. If you feel that a piece of equipment is going to arrive broken, be prepared by having a repair person check the device out for you. This way at least you know if it works rigjht away as opposed to not knowing at all.

I often add as is when I have taken every precaution to describe a items faults. But people do not read listings carefully so i feel the need to add that

Hey shuttle. That's a lot to lose! I pass up "as is" items. Welcome to the blogs!

The reason I include it on old items that don't need to function such as square nails for example is I have had a friend list every fault and the buyer tried to say item not as described. He won the dispute but I don't like to have to deal with disputes

I agree with carol there - I use "as is" on some items as a blanket precaution, due to buyers not reading a description thorughly - I disclose ALL known problems with a used item!

I have seen a marked increase of 'item sold as is' rubber stamps that I sell lately. Using this phrase is, for sure, a growing trend. -Jeff

I have had buyers not read or review all the photo's I put on my listings
I am extremely careful, but they don't take the time.
So that is why I include "as is "or "as found"

Hello all,

I know that "As Is" is used very often, however the problem is misuse has become the abuse of the masses. Let me explain, when you buy something and the person adds "As Is" this is taken to mean there is some defect that the seller believes you as the buyer can live with, as it should mean. The problem is a lot of people are expecting things to work when they get it, and often it does, for the most part "As Is" is taken to mean "I have checked things out and everything appears to be ok, but just in case". This is the best case situation, however this is not always the case, things are sold with the sellers knowledge that the item is broken or in dis-repair. I know that there are a lot of good ebay sellers out there, but it only takes a few bad apples to make the whole lot appear bad.

Thank you,
