Mexican Silver Jewelry: Who is BETO?- The Lesser Silversmiths of Taxco

We can all identify a Spratling, an Aguilar or a Pineda, who the heck is BETO?  I have found many people listing BETO vintage jewelry and dating it anywhere from 1949-1971, but I find nothing written about BETO.  Who is/was this elusive Mexican silversmith?

A great deal has been written about the major silversmiths of the Mexican silver renassianace, but during the time of Spratling, Margot, Goodspeed and the others, there were literally hundreds of silversmiths in Taxco and around Mexico crafting many of the fine pieces we buy and sell on eBay today.  There are many truly unique works of art with clear hallmarks on their backsides, but what do the hallmarks mean?  These artitsts have been classed by many authors as the 'lesser silversmiths".  Many of them created pieces that would rival Spratling or Pineda, but little is known about them.  When one owns a beautiful piece of art, the piece is so much more meaningful if something of the artist is known.

I would like to devote this blog to a sharing of information and insights abouts about the lesser silversmiths of Mexico.

I also am looking for some information about BETO. I have emailed the Taller in Taxco to see if the shop will shed some light on this mysterious craftsman. The current Taller consists of 12 employees. Was BETO, perhaps, a composite of all the "lesser designers" working & creating at Taller de Joyeria from the 40s through the present? The designs are quite diverse, possibly reflecting the designs of many craftsmen.

I have no idea that BETO isn't a real artist, but there is certainly precious little I can find on the man (or woman?). The prices are high and the pieces quite collectible, but who actually created these lovely pieces? One artist? Many craftsmen or craftswomen? Someone must know. Please share your knowledge. Thanks.

I'm glad to know other people are looking for BETO. I have a beautiful, clearly one-of-a-kind bracelet, that I bought many years ago in Boothbay Harbor, before I knew much about the Mexican silversmiths. The woman at the jewelry store told me it wasn't signed. I noticed the eagle hallmark inside but didn't look very hard at it. I recently looked at it with a loop, and found that it also says BETO. Now I am really curious about this maker. The bracelet is so original, hand cut with a gorgeous diamond-shaped green tigers eye stone. I've never seen anything like it.

Yes, I too have a gorgeous Beto piece and would love to know more about this craftsperson. I believe there are several references to Beto in Bille Hougart's book "The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks". However I haven't found a copy of this book yet. I am also interested in a silversmith named Rubens - his pieces are also very collectable and quite rare. Would love to know something about this guy.

I recently acquired a gorgeous pin that can also be used as a pendant. It has an obsidian face with sort of a helmet device at the top and set in the middle of a series of small coils, very heavy, about 3 inches long and at least 2 1/2 wide, stamped .925, Taxco and F. Torres. Any information on the maker F. Torres would be very helpful.
