Negative feedback?

Hello everyone,  our store recently received a negative feedback from one of our international customers because he/she was charged and extra amount of $ from their customs department to receive the item.  We ship items internationally regulary but this rarely happens.  It's hard to tell which country charges how much of these extra customs charges(taxes) because from our experience its is very irregular.

Does anyone else have this kind of experience? As a seller or a buyer?

Is this a fair negative feedback?  And do you think this customs charge is the sender's responsibility?

I believe it is the international buyers responsibility to know if their country charges customs (taxes).

The customs duties in each country varies. It is up to the buyer to know these things. Not your problem.

I don't sell internationally, but I have been considering it. So I'll definitely keep an eye on your post to see what everyone says. I hope you receive loads of responses.

I do believe it is unfair. It is not your responsibilty to assume their custom's fees or taxation. I saw that one seller now has a disclaimer in his/her listings. It clearly states that International buyers are fully responsible for any custom's fees or taxation that occur on their end. I have shipped a number of things internationally in the past and never had this problem.

Maybe you should warn your buyers that they could be charged for this. I see several sellers with eBay auctions stating in their auctions that the buyer is responsible for any duty charges their country adds. As to negative feedback, it's probably not warranted IMO for this, but buyers certainly give sellers negative feedback for a lot of things they don't deserve. The ONLY protection a seller has is to NEVER give feedback to a buyer until they give feedback to you. Yes, I know, that isn't what the eBay rules state, but eBay isn't the one receiving the negative feedback for no reason.

Not your fault....totally up to buyers. Perhaps us international sellers should make a note in our auctions that international buyers are responsbile for their own customs charges. Though in my experience buyers don't bother to read or abide by such terms. Great, now I have one more thing to worry about.

Negative Feedback From Buyer WAS NOT Fair! Duties or taxes was their problem not yours. Most of the time internationally bidders (in my instances anyways) want you to mark and item as a gift and basically not be truthful over it's value on the declaration to avoid this charge!!

I`m with simplybella, I don`t ship internationally. I have on occasion sent to Canada and once to the U.K., but it was too much of a hassle. I had to go to p.o. where shipping within U.S. I can print my shipping labels at home.

Thank you for your feedback :)

I think we are going to have to put some kind of disclaimer on our item descriptions.

Yes its fair negative feedback - just saw something on tv the other day about sellers and that's where you get hit the hardest due to every reason they can possibly charge you for - a disclaimer as was mentioned says it all.

a disclaimer would definately keep it fair and probably a good idea from what I've read.

The negative feedback is UNFAIR to say the least! As a regular buyer on E-Bay it is the buyer's responsibility to know that they will be charged an extra amount for customs in their country!I take my hat off to this seller just to know that they even ship internationally and i think this should be appreciated...!

My only neg in years came from a shipment to Spain recently where the buyer complained that the shipping was too expensive. The strange thing is that they MUST know that I can't charge and receive import fees to THEIR country, right? I mean, how dumb can you be?

Hi! I'm from Poland and last year I bought a pair of jordans on ebay from a seller located in the US. I had to pay customs fees because the packing slip was included in the package. My advice for sellers is: please MARK ITEMS AS GIFT and DO NOT put the packing slip or receipt into the package! I'm sure your international clients as well as you will be satisfied.

It is my opinion that the negative feedback was not warranted. As much as anyone who shops at their local mall should expect to pay a sales tax, anyone importing should expect a duty or tax as well. The seller has absolutely NOTHING to do with a duty or tax charge, as one poster implied above.

Duties and taxes are calculated on the following criteria:

What the commodity
Where the commodity was made
Where the commodity is being shipped to
The value of the commodity

All intl shipments MUST have 3 copies of a commercial invoice, stating the value. That being said, all countries have what's called a Diminimus Value, which is a value below which they do not charge duties and taxes. Also, many countries have a gift exemption, as stated by a poster above. You can either declare a value less than the destination country's dim value, or declare the commodity as a gift per that country's regulations. What's important to remember here, though, is each country is different. I would suggest contacting your carrier's intl customer service or account representative for more information.

I work for UPS and help alot of customers ship int'l. The amount for duties and taxes can only be estimated by the shipping carrier, i.e. UPS, USPS, etc. The charges are up to the country of import. One thing to keep in mind when shipping internationally.....How many United States Postal Workers are in China, Germany, etc??? UPS, FedEx, and DHL are more expensive but quicker and more reliable.

I live in Sweden and bought shoes from the US on eBay a three times. Two times they passed without getting taxed but once they slapped a nice 30% on the total. That might be shocking to some people but that was something I was aware of could happen so it was no big deal. The price in the US is about 50% cheaper than in the EU anyway so you can't lose.
