Archive - April 2007 A Few Examples of What Can be Made with Wild Honeysuckle VinePosted Apr-14-07 14:24:40 PDT Updated Apr-15-07 13:47:50 PDT These are just a few of the pieces I have made with Wild Honeysuckle Vine. They are sold already except for the gourd holders. I love to use every part of the vine, from the thickest stalk to the thinnest, most tender tendrils. In this wall basket you can see how I used small vine to create a woven grid for the background. This is difficult as the vine has to be kept wet during the whole process in order not to break.
This figure is made with a hardshelled gourd and a woven honeysuckle hat. The hat staves are made of large 1/2" vine and the rest is woven of smaller vines. I gave her sweetgrass and broomcorn for hair and her nose is whittled from a piece of sassafras root. This scattering basket is made from thick vine and is stitched in places with milkweed twine. I lined it with rock moss and added feathers and shells for interest. Birds love these baskets filled with feathers and grasses to use as nesting material.
I go into the forest and make pieces that stay where they are created. This honeysuckle and reed station is 5ft. long and took about 1000 yards of vine. The platform is made of Jacob's Needle fronds woven into a grid among the honeysuckle. To me it symbolizes the consciousness of nature to the events of man. Coming back down to a smaller scale, honeysuckle wreaths make wonderful gourd stands. These are listed in my auctions now.
I call these wall wreaths "Piece Keepers" because they are meant to keep the pieces of nature you find in the world that reminds you of the peace in your soul. The peace symbol in the middle is one long jointed section of vine and winds around the entire wreath. I added turkey feathers, rose hips, sweetgrass and snailshells as my personal tokens.
I hope you have been inspired by my art to make some of your own. Please have a look at my listings for vine and gourd pieces as well as live honeysuckle plants to grow your own weaving material.
