Autism and Christmas

I was sitting and thinking about how was Christmas a few years ago. I always went to the stores looking for some kind of clues my son will give me on some toys, so I could get them for xmas. He just past by and he behaved great and did not pay attention to them. At the beginning I thought, he was behaving great, he never want it a toy. Later in life, he wanted it trains, and he only asked for trains, any other toy, he will not play with it. Around maybe 8 years old, he asked me for three toys. He want it a fan, an elevator and stairs for home. Maybe to you could be funny, but deep inside it is sad. Now he is 15 and he loves to collect things, like rocks, dinosaurs, shark tooths, star war ships, books and lot of other things. Now he will ask for some toys like spy glasses, space ships, blocks to build cities, nintendo tape. I am happy, he is asking me for toys, some of them are not age appropiated, but I love to sit and watch him play. Just want it to share it with you all, so people will understand a little bit about Autism and also share it with parents having children with Autism. Adriana

I used to help run an archaeology camp (kids 12-15), and at least once a year, we'd have an autistic/Aspberger's camper. Some of them were very focused on what they were doing, but I have to say that it was well worth the extra understanding and attention they needed, because I have to say that their different perspective is an education for all of us.
