Most Recent Posts Trinidad, CO: Sex Change Capital of the U.S.Posted Sep-19-08 16:38:53 PDT Updated Sep-19-08 17:01:19 PDT *A couple of weeks back CBS did a little piece on "CBS News Sunday Morning" about Trinidad, CO. This comes just a few months after PJ Raval and Jay Hodges' Independent Film "Trinidad" premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival. From what I can gather from their website and clip, the documentary follows three transgender women and their experiences in Trinidad, CO. What follows is a little blog piece I wrote in response to the CBS spot and thought I'd copy here for the eBay community. I couldn't seem to imbed the clip, but I did paste a link to the CBS story and to the movies website at the end of my post.* ************************************************ Boy do the locals get tired of hearing that Trinidad is the Sex change capital of the U.S. Trinidadians want only to remember that in 1882 Bat Masterson served as town marshal and that in the late 1800's Trinidad was a crossroads for the pioneers moving west along the Santa Fe Trail and today they like to boast of their small budding "art community" and their new golf course community. What they try and forget is that in the late 1960's the coal mining industry began to dwindle and Trinidad practically became a ghost town. In 2000 it was reported in the New York Times that it was Dr. Biber and his transgender surgeries that continued to keep Mt. San Rafael Hospital open, our one and only hospital still to this day, despite a 50 percent population drop since the 1950's (oddly, Dr. Biber is not even mentioned on the "history" page of Mt. San Rafael Hospital's website). Even today, without the energy companies choosing to mine for methane here in our local mountains, there would not be resurgence in the local economy or in the community of Trinidad, Co. The people of Trinidad say they want to be known for more than just being the sex change capital of the U.S. but the truth is the current population of Trinidad has done nothing to be known for. Dr. Biber and now Dr. Marci Bowers ARE the history of Trinidad and the reason why this town was able to weather the hard times and didn't disappear like so many other economically depressed small towns across the west. So I ask, why be ashamed? around the world people over work, neglect, and beat donkeys; then when
they tire of them they often end up at livestock auctions where they
are sold for meat consumption overseas or to ropers who use them to
"practice roping" in lieu of cattle. I have also come to understand
that donkeys are the most mistreated domestic farm animal in America,
but due to their limited numbers, the abuse is far less noticeable to
the general public than if it was inflicted on horses. Why
are these amazing, intelligent, gentle creatures treated with such
disdain? Many believe that it is because they have little "monetary"
value and others believe that because a donkey is much smarter than a horse and has a stronger survival instinct than a horse, when it hesitates before doing anything, this behavior is interpreted by a handler as stubborness instead of thoughtfulness. As a result, donkeys are often beaten into submission. As the number of donkeys
worldwide grows from it's current 44 million, sadly, so do the cases of
abuse and neglect. Here in Colorado, Kathy Dean
has taken her passion for rescuing donkeys and created Longhopes Donkey
Shelter where donkeys are not only rescued but rehabilitated, trained
and found new loving homes. Over the last 7 years the Shelter has
rescued almost 330 donkeys and found homes for over 290! |
