I just don't understand :(

I don't understand some of the changes ebay is making to feedback.

#1 If they are removing the ability to leave buyers negative and neutral, why have the ability to leave them positive?

#2 If sellers can no longer report buyer issues, how will future sellers know if there is a problem? Doesn't this just open us up to fraud?

There are several good examples of this.

A. Habitual check bouncers. If someone has been bouncing checks, and sellers can not notify the community of the issue, other sellers will continue shipping items to that buyer and run the risk of getting the bounced check notice afterward. Also, currently sellers who do not accept checks may choose to do so on a case by case basis. How can they make that decision without accurate information available on the buyers history?

B. Fraudulent claims. What is to stop someone form placing orders on ebay with the intention of claiming they didn't receive the order or received it damaged? Someone could be pulling that scam 50 times a week, and we as sellers would have no way of knowing!

C. False sob stories. I remember a couple years ago someone begged me not to file the NPB strike. They said their mother had died the week before. Upon inspection of their feedback I discovered the mother had died 2 previous times.

D. Identifying poor sellers. Last year I wrote an ebay guide on how to use feedback to make buying decisions. One of my key suggestions was to look at the seller's feedback left for others section. If a seller uses profanity or is deragatory in their negative feedback comments it goes a long way to showing you what kind of person they are. This change removes a very valuable tool we had in indentifying poor sellers during the buying process.

E. Feedback padding. Doesn't this make it a whole lot easier for sellers trying to pad their positive feedback to do so?

I think this leaves a huge potential for fraud, and makes ebay a criminal Candyland. Why not allow the comments and just not count it into their feedback score? Then both buyers and sellers are protected.

And as a side note, I have what I think are 3 very good suggestions for changes.

a. Why not create a system for buyers much like the seller Detailed Seller Ratings? Rate a buyer on speed of payment and communication. Maybe even be able to rate them on things like payment clearance.

b. Allow negative comments, but do not count them into the score. Then sellers will have full access to information on potential problems to look for.

c. Have buyer and seller feedback calculate seperately. You'd have 2 numbers, one for buying and one for selling.

I think by all the "hints" ebay is giving us all....they really dont want sellers here anymore.....they just want to be assoiated with big box retailers.....we are being shunted to the back...what we want doesnt matter......

I am going to start leaving Negative Positive feedback in all caps. I am also going to use Toolhaus.or and rottenbidders.com to report bad buyers.

As a recent buyer, I have always left positive feedback, but I have just had the most horrid experience with a powerseller who instead of resolving the issue with me after tons of emails to him, he insults me.

I'm just saying that I can see it from our point of view as sellers and unforunately now see it from the point of view as a buyer.

I had exactly happen to me what you described, I had someone saying they never received the item even tho I got confirmation and a sig and had to send them another item.

Thanks for bringing this subject up it is concerning a lot of us.

They want to turn eBay into another overstock dot com, but they will be cutting off their noses to spite their faces, if you ask me.
eBay was started and kept going by small sellers that wanted to sell their items - and eBay has a rep for being a place where you can find just about anything.
This will stop when it becomes a site for powersellers that strictly do large ticket items, or things you can find in any dept store.

Seperate FB for buying and selling is not a bad idea. And the buyers should have DSRs - and the shipping cost should be dropped from the DSRs for sellers...there's nothing to complain about if you knew the cost up front.

My two cents.

I too have had bad experiences as a buyer. In fact, out of the total feedback of 9752 I have received over the years 33 have been negative. At least 15 of those were from buying.

But from my own experiences I can see the need for having accountability on both sides of the fence.

By all means protect buyers and make their experience a good one. But DON'T sacrifice sellers to do it. We pay their paycheck!

As for them trying to get rid of small sellers, I don't know. Ebay makes a good deal of money on smaller sellers. And their success as the top person-to-person trading community is what sets them apart from every other similar network. I think if they pushed us out they would lose their edge in the marketplace. But I also think that if they planned on pushing us out, they would not have taken steps to make it easier to make Powerseller.

I agree, especially since the usps keeps raising shipping costs every 6 months so then we have to make adjustments to our stock unless you use the calculator, and that's sometimes is just to confusing.

They can't compete as another Overstock. The internet is already full of places like that.

Plus, many of their buyers are sellers to. One stop dealing.

And I agree, their thrive on their rep of being able to find whatever you need. If they lose that edge, they are done for.

The shipping calculator is flawed anyway. For each item you have to enter the weight packaged. Well the total is not the same as the sum of the parts, know what I mean?

And the discount calculator is flawed as well. Like my items. I start my shipping at $2.99 for first class, with free additional shipping on qualifying items. Well in order to set up the shipping discounts I set it to take $2.99 off the shipping price of each additional item.

The result? If someone tries to check out with a 6 item order they will see $2.99 for first class, $21.04 for priority and $87.99 for express. This happens because it is only taking $2.99 off the more expensive methods too. I don't think there is a way of correcting that, I guess I should look into more though.

I agree with everything that you are saying, I would fall foul of the profanity as twice this month I have been so frustrated at feedback given by scam buyers that I have called them liars in my reply, sorry but I am at the point of snapping.
We as sellers just have to work harder and harder for less and less rewards and I don't always mean the money.
I used to feel great about my feedback ratings and now it is like ebay has invited buyers to say their worst in order to frustrate us into leaving.
I have a buyer that left negative feedback the day after they purchased the item, even before it was shipped, they had not been with ebay long but that makes no difference I can not get it removed and the feedback was because they later found a cheaper item. What a farce.

I find these changes disturbing to say the least. Is it no longer a two way street? A "buyers market" only? As someone who only sells occasionally this does not affect me to the degree of some members. For the most part-all my experiences have been good-with the exception of two out of over one hundred. And those two perhaps could have been prevented by better communication. However it still makes me think twice about how closely I must watch auctions for people who might try to pull something. As others have already mentioned-what's the point of feedback when it's this biased? I don't understand how ebay came to the conclusion this is a good idea. I think it will be interesting to see if policies are changed in the future to make feeback more 'balanced' between buyers and sellers again.

Unfortunately with gas prices going up to over $5.00 for diesel in California and other States, everything is going up as well. Such as packing tape, bubble wrap and other shipping suppilies not to mention gas to the post office. I don't know who in E-Bay came up with the idea of being able to rate the shipping/handling charges but in my opinion, as another commenter stated, "If you don't like the S/H charges, don't bid on the item. Thanks for letting me put my two cents in. :-)
