The Zen of Hoopmaking

Aloha kakahiaka(Good Morning) Kanes & Wahines, I wanted to share a bit about the art of Bentwood Hoopmaking for those of you who are interested enough to continue reading this posting. The best source for the greenwood cuttings are cherryplum trees. The finished hoops are exceedingly strong after they are cured (aged, dried) in the larger sizes. They are ideally suited to any Native American craft that uses a hoop or ring as its basis. I have made hoops from ring size up to about 26" in diameter out of a mutitude of woods using a simple method of bending the wood slowly when it is at the appropriate stage of "Leather Tough" wet/dry. Usually about 3 to 4 days after cuttings are taken from the tree. First there is a limbering process accompanied with a prayer to The Creator for the sensitivity to feel the process and let it be successful.
