Potty Training?

Any advice out there for a new puppy owner?  I have an older German Shepard but my husband had the job of raising her.  Now I have a 9 week old little boy pure bred and he is so adorable but I need help with the training.  My husband is on a mission right now and not home to help me out.

My issue is I will take him outside and he will not go to the bathroom unless I stay out there with him.  If I bring him back in and I wasn't outside he'll just go in the house.

Have you tried the crate training? Since hes only 9 weeks, I always stayed outside with them till they were about 5 months, they get scared being by themselves since they were with there mommy and other puppies.

Make sure you reward them with a small treat after they go also, never hit or yell at your baby, just tell them no no potty and show them and take them outside

my dog is almost 3 and I still have to take him outside and wait...FEAR he'll get hit by a car...but HE INSISTS on doing both in the house IF the weather is NOT to his liking...(we did NOT have him as a puppy..So he came (sorta) house broken!) Keep doing what you are doing...but maybe make a few more trips outside and discipline him when he piddles or poos inside..that's all I can tell ya..

hi! i stay outside with my dogs until i see them go,,,,inside i have potty pads on the floor, at first in each room, then i eliminate them until there is just one by the door to the back yard, they use the potty pads well but it's temporary,,,one day he'll come get you when he needs to go out but now he's very young

good luck! :)

Crate training really works. They also make things for the floor that attract doggies to "go" on them, and eventually you can narrow it down to one small spot and then move them outside til they get used to that.

My advice is to stay out there with him. As soon as he goes, give him all the wonderful comments hug kisses the whole nine yards. Do this consistantly and constantly for at least two weeks using the same words each time. I used "time to go" but you can say anything, but keep it the same. He will get the message that going outside means mom really loves me! No punishments for doing it elsewhere, just oodles of love doing it in the correct spot...outside. Consistant and constant are the main ingredients. I'd go for taking him outside every hour on the hour. You don't have to do this at night, but make sure he is in a space that he consideres his....a crate is good. He won't go inside of a large crate. I did litters of orphan dogs for the humane society and had them all potty trained in no time. I'd run them outside each morning and they'd all go right away and didn't go in the crate during the night. He can learn to go on command and watch right after meals. He needs to poop just like a human baby. A meal just seems to trigger a big poop. Pretty soon, you will be able to just say "time to go" and stand at the door while he charges out to please you. Good luck. Just don't stress, stress makes the process go way too long.

When I first got our dog he was 14 months. I took him out every time on the leash and brought him to a specific spot in our yard and told him to go and waited until he did. It took about 2-3 months of doing this and after a while all we had to say was "in the back" and he would go to the spot and go. No poop all over the yard. and he is 9 now.
