How do I choose the best walker for my needs?Posted Jan-24-08 13:31:20 PST Updated Jan-28-08 07:24:07 PST Which is the best walker for my needs? We hear this question all of the time and while we are not physicians and cannot give specific issue related advice. We have been in the business long enough to offer some general advice when searching for a walker. Walkers come in a variety of configerations. Folding four legged, the most common and probably the most familiar. This type is usually aluminum or chrome. Then there are the folding walkers with wheels either 3" or 5". These are the exact same as the traditional folding walker with wheels replacing the front feet and glides (plastic covers over the rubber rear feet) that enable the walker to glide across the floor. Many people use tennis balls for this purpose and while it is functional we do not recommned this because of how dirty they get. The fuzz on the tennis balls are breeding grounds for bacteria not to mention dust balls! The plastic glides work better on all surfaces. The person this is suited for is one with limited mobility and one who will not be walkng very far at one time. Also those in rehab from surgery such as hip replacement or knee replacement. It is usually for those who are unstable on either a temporary basis or a more permenant basis. The key here is the distance expected to travel and the load bearing tendencies. If the person will be using a mobility device to move about the home, i.e. from the bedroom to the bathroom, or from the bedroom to kitchen etc, this may be the best for you. Another key is the stability. These types of walkers with few wheels or no wheels are more stable and more sturdy and can take more of a weight load with no worries of it moving from under you. This is the choice for those who expect to be using a mobility device on a temporary basis or who need more support than a rolling walker. The other types of walkers have either three wheels or four wheels. The most common is referred to as a "rollator" it has 4 large wheels and hand brakes. You will also note a seat in the middle with some sort of basket there for carrying things. For the more mobile person who will be traveling greater distances this is a better choice because it travels over a variety of surfaces easier. Plus it gives you a seat to rest when you get tired. These are very common in assisted living environments and also for those who need assistance but are not yet ready for a wheelchair. Most of these walkers come in a variety of colors. To determine if this one is right for you. The questions to ask are; how far will i be traveling? what is the weight load I will be placing on it? What type of terrain will I be traversing? If you need some assistance with stability but not total weight bearing, this may be the better choice for you. It is also used by those consumers who expect a more long term use of thier mobility device. We hope this helps in making your decision.
