Here is my oldest son, who we call Sweet Pea. (yeah really, even at 6'6", we call him that ! ) I am well pleased with the man he has grown to be. He is a wonderful young man who made the unselfish decision to interrupt college, put it on hold to protect his country. I have spent most of my life protecting my babies. Now I won't be able to protect him. I must trust him to God, our Country and our Corps. Semper Fi

request to repost a story I posted last year. To all those who wander thru my blog, I
will share a story about my Track and Field past !!
Well it was 1983 and I was a young Marine -- Proudly serving my country and just married to a handsome stud of a Marine. He made my heart go pitter patter then. Life was good. Track season rolls around and I am sent to Camp Pendelton, California to train and compete on the US Marine Corps All Marine Track & Field Team and the United States All Interservice Track & Field Team. It was an outstanding track season, I met and competed with Jackie Joyner (before she added the Kersee) and Florence Griffith (before she added the Joyner). I was jumping high and running fast and enjoying life !! The US Marine Corps published an article about my track and field exploits in the HQMC Hotline (the newsletter for Marines) and the article title was WONDER WOMAN MARINE ! (now you all know the real secret of where my ID really came from). The title came from a track meet we had between the USMC and the USN (Navy)...I won 5 individual events (High Jump, 100m Hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m ) and ran anchor leg on 3 winning relay teams ( 4 x 100 , 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay). Here is a picture I dug out of a memory box.
During that season I jumped high enough to make the Olympic 'A' qualifing standard. Which all but guarantees me a spot on the 1984 Olympic team. The season is great and then my newly wed handsome husband was sent on a deployment to Japan for 6 months. Track season ended and I was sent back to my Permanent duty station to be a regular Marine again! The year marches on and training continues. Then Wooo Hooo it is 1984.. the Olympic year !! My handsome Marine comes home from Japan in late January and the Marine Corps sports unit at HQMC, Washington DC notifies me that they have contacted the USOC and if I should win a medal at the Olympics they are going to possibly allow me to wear my uniform for the medal ceremony and the Marine Corps will use it for future recruiting tape. It is all exciting. The Marine Corps is going to send me to Camp Pendleton to train and prepare for the 1984 season and hopefully the Olympics which will be held in Los Angeles. I get permission to travel home, for a 4 day weekend, to visit my Mom and Dad before leaving. I get sick on the road trip home....I am a very health conscious person and rarely get sick...so, off to the Doctor I go. After some tests, my Doctor, who has taken care of my since I stop seeing my Pediatrician walks into the room with this big smile on his face !! I sit there with my Mom and my Husband, thinking why is he smiling when something is wrong with me and track season is just on the horizon. He says, well Kimberley, good news...your not sick your pregnant !! I think Oh My Gosh -- I look at my husband, I look at my Mom and I am so happy inside. Then it occurs to me....OMG....The Olympics....I'll be 6.5 months pregnant when they happen...OMG....OMG...what will I do !! So, I missed the 1984 Olympics that year and gave birth to a beautiful Baby Boy in October 1984...That handsome young man whose picture is posted on an earlier blog post of mine. He and his younger brother are my Gold Medal !! Someday, I'll tell you the story of his friends in middle school finding out this story ...but that will wait for another day !! COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 19, 2007) - As the three-time defending NORCECA Women's Continental Champion, the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team moved one step closer to a fourth consecutive title by defeating Dominican Republic 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 on Wednesday evening on the final day of pool play at the 2007 NORCECA event in Winnipeg, Canada.
Team
USA, as the winner of Pool B with a 3-0 record, advances directly to
the tournament's semifinal round on Friday. The time and opponent will
be determined after Thursday's quarterfinal matches. Dominican Republic finishes Pool B with a 2-1 record and will face Puerto Rico (1-2 in Pool A) in the quarterfinal round.
Ogonna
Nnamani (Normal, Ill.) led a balanced American attack with 13 points on
11 kills, one block and one ace. Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, Calif.)
secured 11 points in the victory with seven kills and four blocks.
Tayyiba Haneef Park (Laguna Hills, Calif.) added 10 points with eight
kills and two blocks. Danielle Scott-Arruda (Baton Rouge, La.)
contributed six kills and two blocks for eight points, while Cassie
Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.) chipped in six points.
"I
am pleased with how this team is showing its maturity and carrying out
the plans that we work on in practice," U.S. Women's National Team Head
Coach 'Jenny' Lang Ping said. "We have done a very nice job of holding
down our errors - especially in serve and pass. We are looking forward
to a day off to prepare for the semifinals."
Team USA held a 10-3 margin in blocks to offset a 44-37 disadvantage in kills for the match. Both teams served out two aces.
"I
thought we raised our level today with the level of competition," Bown
said. "We still have a long way to go to reach the level we must have
to be successful in the semis and finals."
Dominican
Republic's Bethania De La Cruz De Pena was the leading scorer for the
match with 20 points through 19 kills and a block. Milagros Cabral de
la Cruz charted 12 points all on kills in the loss. Cosiri Rodriguez
Andino provided seven points, while Cindy Rondon Martinez added six
points.
The U.S. started Robyn Ah Mow-Santos (Honolulu)
at setter, Scott-Arruda and Bown at middle blocker, Nnamani and
Haneef-Park at outside hitter and Busse at opposite. Nicole Davis
(Stockton, Calif.) handled the libero duties. Lindsey Berg (Honolulu) and Katie Olsovsky (Hermosa Beach, Calif.)
entered for Ah Mow-Santos and Busse, respectively, in a defensive
double-switch in the third set. Sarah Drury (Louisville, Ky.) was
subbed into the match in the third set briefly for Haneef-Park.
The NORCECA Continental Championship will not only crown the top team among North American, Central American and Caribbean nations, it will more than likely qualify two teams into the FIVB World Cup held Nov. 2-16 in Japan. The World Cup field includes the five continental champions, the four best Continental vice-champions based on the 2007 FIVB World Ranking, host country Japan and two wild cards as chosen by the FIVB and Japan Volleyball Association. The World Cup is the first 2008 Olympics qualifier with the top three teams earning an automatic bid.
Nnamani
propelled the U.S. to a five-point, 25-20 victory in the opening set as
she piled up five kills and an ace. Haneef-Park added three kills and a
block in the set.
Team USA used a
balanced offense in the second set to secure a 25-18 victory.
Scott-Arruda tallied two kills and two blocks for four points, while
Haneef-Park collected four kills.
The
U.S. recovered from a 16-13 deficit at the second technical timeout of
the final set and came back to knot the score at 21-all. Bown tallied a
kill and Nnamani followed with a back row kill for a 23-21 Team USA
advantage. After a Dominican Republic
kill, Bown slammed a kill down the line and put up a match-ending block
for her fourth point of the set and third in the waning stages. Nnamani
also added four kills in the third set.
The
U.S. enters the tournament as the three-time defending champion. The
Americans have won the bi-annual event five times (1981, 1983, 2001,
2003 and 2005) and have played in the last eight championship matches
against rival Cuba.
At the last NORCECA Championship tournament held in 2005, Team USA won
its third consecutive title with a five-set victory over Cuba in the gold medal match at Trinidad & Tobago.
Cuba has won the most zonal championships with 12 titles, while the U.S. has earned the gold medal five times. Mexico captured the first championship in 1969 and repeated in 1971.
