My Life as an Egg Collector

Can't Fool Me! ...at least not this time....

So here I was, minding my own business and I come across this gorgeous egg.  Now, if you are an egg collector, then you know how hard it is to know what to buy and you have to assess everything including the markings, certificates of authenticity, how many are in the limited edition, etc.  Decorative eggs cross over into many other areas ofart and collectibles because so many artists will create one egg every so often.

SoI am not a big floral painting person and I come across this artist's egg listed as “Buy it now” and the artist's name is LenaLiu.  I do my research and I guess she is the sh** in floral and bird painting, on a contemporary level, that is to say.  Anyway, I go tothe Bradford Exchange (BE) and lo and behold, this egg is indeed for sale right now at the BE for $39.99.

Why did this irritate me?  Well, because it is currently for sale on ebay for 46.99 as a “Buy it now” with the shipping at 7.95.

Not only that....I look at the description of the item and LOOK, it says the MSRP (manufacterer's suggested retail price) is a whopping 52.99....

I do NOT think this egg isn't worth the money at any of these prices.. it is gorgeous and made with quality materials.  The artistry itself makes it well worth the investment BUT, I get irritated when I see things like this because the person is either lying or they aren't posting accurate, up-to-date information. Both of which are just as bad.

I think anyone that sells regularly on Ebay has a bad ad now and then, they just didnt see the mistake or have someone to proof it for them.

My whole point is this, beware of this sort of thing.  I am in the middle of obtaining a good overall view of decorative eggs in relation to collecting because I want to create a guide for them.  The LAST thing I need is to have to verify every single darned listing on here.  But that is the way the world is and I (as well as you, the darling egg collectors out there) have to adjust and overcome it.

So that is the news for today!

This week in Egg Collecting

It's a lonely world out there for Egg Collectors....

I had to name this blog something and since most of my ramblings will be about Egg Collecting (yes, that is with a Capital E and Capital C), I figured that would be in my title.

For the Egg Collector, life is hard.  There are no guides of any kind out there, no price guides, no books with pictures of markings, etc.. you know, the type of books and reference materials that antique collectors have.

I have these antique books because I collect other things - but only for resale since my taste in it changes from day to day.  I cannot be entertained by anything but my Egg Collection and Wade miniatures for any length of time.  So I hit the road and pick up this and that and have a nice rotation of antiques in and out of my house and all because I have the reference materials to help me know what I am doing.

Egg Collectors do not have that luxury.  I have looked high and low for books on Egg Collecting and cannot find anything up to date with real information about what is out there. There are plenty of books about the Romanov family and the Carl Faberge egg collection, but who can afford that?  Nobody - because mostly museums own them.

So what do I suggest for the average egg collector.. ebay... ebay... closed listings...  Then of course, you should always check any websites of the manufacterer.  Franklin Mint has a site and prices listed.  You can google and check out what other people are paying for eggs.

The biggest thing to not get caught up in is EMOTION when buying for your collection.  Sure, some of the eggs look nice but are they resellable?  Can you make a profit off of it?  Be sure that you buy wisely so that you can turn around and sell it and then get the really GOOD stuff.

If you are collecting for personal reasons, then it doesnt really matter since you probably wont ever sell them. For me, I want to trade up and get better eggs till I have the most glorious collection of eggs on earth that only the Romanovs can rival.  Will it happen, probably not but I enjoy it and getting there is more than half the fun.

There are no associations for egg collecting.. none that I can find.  Unless of course, if you count two egg collectors that have randomly ran into each other and continue to communicate about them...

What do I buy?  Well, 90% of the time I buy what has markings and has a reputation for fine porcelain, glass, etc...  The other 9% of the time, I buy what I think is more rare (based on some sort of knowledge), is beautiful and is professionally made and the last 1% of the time, I buy without using my brain or took a chance on something.

There are a lot of unbranded gilted eggs with rhinestones and crystals out there but if you are going to trade up with them.. forget it.  You will probably lose money on them.  Now, if you enjoy them, buy them, that is what it is about anyway.
